Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7.

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

    FIXED:

My original problem was USB not recognized Com Port 3 with Error 10 and a yellow triangle.

So, I had the same problem- I'm running Win 8.1 (64 bit) on an HP AMD Pavillion - With a Prolific simple (Audio cable) Serial port to USB converter.

*****  DEVICE STATUS = this device is working properly *****

This driver works for me - Prolific 3.4.25.218 from 10/7/2011.

I can't vouch for this site but I also found it reproduced here....

    http://www.accustarlabs.com/Upload/File/radstar-downloads/library/Prolific-v150-Instructions.pdf

You could Google for "Prolific 3.4.25.218"

I'm not altogether sure where I originally downloaded it from but it does work- flawlessly.

    NOTES

    (i) Goto devices and drivers, Pick the USB port (with yellow triangle) Right click - then properties.

    Select > Hardware >properties> GENERAL > Driver > Change settings > Update driver -

let me pick the driver from a list

(ii) Choose the update driver and pick this one from the advanced driver properties window.

(iii) I did not need a re-boot, nor did I need to choose "run as administrator"

(iv) Dont forget to set the comx,rate,n,8,1 settings to suit your device.

As strange as it may look, you need an outdated driver to make it work. The only working version i've found is 3.3.2.102, which you can find on the links bellow:

    <removed>

You need to force this driver version by going to device manager, choose update driver from right click into prolific adapter, the choose "browse my computer for driver software", then "let me pick...".  On the next window, it should show you different versions of the driver, and you need to choose ver 3.3.2.102 ok?

I agree with Sergio, you can try any of the selection 2013, 2010. It will be automatically detected if there is some issues. Try one at a time and you can still go back and proceed with the next version of the driver. I encounter this problem after I update my PC to Windows 8.1 but nothing to worry need only to update your driver and follow the steps written by Mr. Sergio.
