Figure out when the hardware device manufacturer will be providing you with drivers for the hardware you want to use under the OS you want to use.  If they are not - then there you go.

Wrong answer. These drivers worked flawlessly with Win7, and now they are broken in Win8. Probably some simple switch in the device driver layer, and perhaps it is, indeed, a bug actually in the driver that is now exposed in Win8...but in the meantime I am telling all my customers, who depend on their GPS's functioning, to downgrade to Win7.

Regardless of where the bug actually is, it is a backwards compat issue that breaks the interfacing of many GPS;s to Windows.

I just bought a prolific usb to com adapter and plugged it in and it worked with Windows 8 pro 64bit. No driver install. Must have auto downloaded with Windows Update. So yes they do work under windows 8 prob just depends on which adapter you have. Mine unfortunately doesnt have anything written on it.

I installed a Manhattan USB-to-Serial converter, item #205153 and used the Prolific driver 3.4.25.218 dated 10/07/2011 and it works. If you do a Windows Update, it will update the driver to the 3.4.42.258 driver dated 11/12/2012. Had to roll back to the 2011 driver ...

You are using one of the prolific USB adapters that has reached it's end of life. The prolific driver check for chipset version information and explicitly fails start, hence the code 10. This is not Win8 issue or driver bug.

Windows 8 is NOT supported in PL-2303HXA and PL-2303X EOL chip versions.

    • Run PL2303 CheckChipVersion tool program in Windows XP/Vista/7 to check chip version.
    • Windows 98 and Windows ME driver support is discontinued and is no longer provided.
    • Prolific recommends to buy **PL-2303HXD (HX Rev D) or PL2303TA**  chip.
