Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7

On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7.  IE10 requires this update, which 'improves the features and performance' of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.

If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you're already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn't install again.

It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.

    Hi klamontagne,

    Thank you for getting back to us. Since after using the ccleaner affected your Windows Live Essentials, then you just have to repair it by doing the steps below:

    1. Go to **Control Panel.**2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a Program.
    2. Locate Windows Essentials 2011 or Windows Essentials 2012, and then click Uninstall/Change.
    3. When a window appears, select Repair all Windows programs.
    4. Restart your computer after the repair.

    I am not even going to start that ball of wax again. Having to use third party programs to fix something MS puts out as an update knee jerk patch. I would love to have better security with IE10 but not with extra work from me because the data pushed out from MS has no accountability, oversight or Quality Assurance checks. As a user I need something that is productive and works without spending days trying to reconfigure. I read somewhere...Computers are "supposed" to make life easier"!...wish MS would read the same

    So...sorry the problem with KB2670838 is still open and awaiting a response(FIX) from MS

    I'm sorry Susan but although well-meant, this suggestion is unacceptable. As a veteran gamer I use the video card drivers that work well on all my games and other applications, and I don't change them simply to achieve compatibility with Windows Updates!

    The answer is for Microsoft to fix the updates, not for us to change other parts of our system.

    In Microsoft's eyes the issue is not open.  There solution is to tell you to update the video card driver and not do anything to their patches or code. Send an email to (removed for privacy) (change the -at- to @) and explain the problem with IE10 and how this update is faulty.

    Until you make a stink, nothing will change here.

    I need your help.  I either need you to email Steve Ballmer or I need you to help me by letting me set up a support case for you.  Microsoft responds to customer complaints, and not necessarily in a forum like this.

    The only way Microsoft will fix the updates is for you to complain.  To the top guy.

    Send an email to Steve Ballmer steveb-at-Microsoft.com (change the -at- to @) and explain the problem with IE10 and how this update is faulty. 

    Better hurry, though.  Steve's a short-timer.

    Hi Susan...set up a support case! I will work on a letter over the weekend to "who-ever-is-in-charge-in-India/USA" and include the soon to retire Steve-what-ever-his-name-is.

    Interesting that MS stock jumped 5% on the news he was being "let-go"...maybe the pic of him with his tongue "out" was enough?
