Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7

On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7.  IE10 requires this update, which 'improves the features and performance' of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.

If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you're already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn't install again.

It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.

    Hi Susan

    I am sure you have seen my email now!...yes I had installed the latest video drivers from manufacturers, Even installed updated programs and the latest drivers to those programs, but that was some months ago, and now laptops have a Mirror Images from last year and everything now appears to work again, less this KB update and no IE 10. This update has not been applied to ANY of our HP Windows 7 computers! I wasted toooo many hours on this beta update on 2 laptops!

    To the best of my knowledge the "fix" is to install a video driver update from your video card manufacturer.  If all of you have done that and you STILL are having issues, please email me at susan-at-msmvps.com and I'll set up a support case for you (change the -at- to an @)

    Microsoft cannot fix what they don't understand.

    For what it's worth, I use www.ccleaner.com and opening "Tools" and then "Startup", I virtually disabled almost everything that was starting up when booting. After doing this, I then installed the IE 10 update and it works. My original problem was that "Windows Live Essentials" software products would not open after the IE 10 update.

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply. I've checked the status of this issue and what my colleague said, there's no update regarding the issue.  Internet Explorer 10 requires the KB2670838 update, so uninstalling this will also uninstall Internet Explorer 10. If you want to use Windows Live Mail, the KB update must be removed.

    I have been dealing with this problem for months, and the Windows update always installs IE 10 when this is a known problem, because after you uninstall the IE 10 update, magically it then moves to recommended update. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

     

    It's interesting I see a lot of finger pointing going on on what causes this issue.  I think there is a problem with Nvidia's drivers with IE 10, is there any update on when Nvidia users will be able to use Live Mail and IE 10?  Are you working with Nvidia to fix the problem?  Please don't just point me to another forum, please answer the question.

    Have you any news about this problem? I am experiencing this problem since the release of  Internet Explorer 10.

    I work on desktop with ASUS motherboard and Nvidia GTX580 based video card on a x64 system. I am really surprised that Video Drivers may cause crash of Windows Live programs and also Firefox ( I use both IE and firefox on my PC).

    I tried to do a new install of IE10 today but it's the same problem. So I'm going to uninstall IE10 and KB2370838 and go back to IE9 until there is a solution... maybe one day ?

    Is Microsoft still working on this bug or did they give up ?
