Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7

On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7.  IE10 requires this update, which 'improves the features and performance' of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.

If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you're already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn't install again.

It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.

    To the best of my knowledge the "fix" is to install a video driver update from your video card manufacturer.  If all of you have done that and you STILL are having issues, please email me at susan-at-msmvps.com and I'll set up a support case for you (change the -at- to an @)

    After installing updates to windows explorer 10 or 11 (using Windows 7)  my windows live mail stops working just like others in this form.  If I uninstall KB2670838, that installs with both updates, Windows live mails works again but I am then back to using Explorer 9.

    I have updated all drivers (Video, Sound, Etc) and still have the same issue.  I have also re-installed Widows Live Essentials 2012 and I have ran the repair function mentioned in the form.  The issue continues.

    The only way to use Live Mail is to un-install KB2670838.  I did not find a solution that works for me under this form or others for this issue.   Does Microsoft have any new suggestions on how to correct this?

    I am having the same issues. Plus in firefox, the text becomes very low res when I scroll, and it fixes itself some seconds later. Windows tech support suggest I pay them $99 dollars to fix this. Can I really be expected to continue rolling back my system to a time before the update was issued?

    I have updated all drivers (Video, Sound, Etc) and still have the same issue.

    It could well be that video card manufacturers are simply not producing drivers for older cards that will handle this improved functionality in IE10/11. What is the make and model of your display adapter?

    My box auto-updated to IE 11 about a week ago. I've not had any problems so far but it's also been a while since I've seen it in IE 10. Possibly it was fixed by some pre-IE 11 update. On the other hand, in my case, it's always been an occasional issue.

    I guess if I don't see it in say the next three months I can conclude that it's fixed.
