Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7

On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7.  IE10 requires this update, which 'improves the features and performance' of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.

If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you're already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn't install again.

It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.

    I have a self build with the following spec:

    Windows Live Mail (client) failed to load when KB2670838 was installed. Uninstalling resolved the problem.

    Again, when IE10 was installed Windows Live Mail (client) failed to load - uninstalling IE10 also fixed the problem.

    However, I am concerned that when IE10 is made mandatory I will lose the ability to access my e-mails!!!

    Selfbuild desktop with Asus motherboard, intel I7 processor and nVidia GeForce 600 serie video card with latest drivers, giving problems with microsoft Life mail and Firefox.

    Life mail as well as Firefox refuse to start.

    KB2670838 has been updated (12 March) to give details of hardware that doesn't like this platform update. There are also driver download links.

    From *After installation of update KB2670838 Win 7 keeps crashing to blue screen* dated 1 March*:*

    Microsoft is aware of an issue some customers are experiencing when installing KB2670838 on certain laptop systems with hybrid graphics. We are looking into the situation and are considering blocking the update for systems that could be affected. Customers who are experiencing issues on systems that already have installed the update should consider uninstalling KB2670838.

    This Windows Update has been downgraded from Recommended to Optional, so it shouldn't install automatically even though automatic installation is selected.

    KB2823483, Internet Explorer 10 does not install on some hybrid graphics systems, lists a number of computer models known to have problems. These will probably exhibit faults if KB2670838 is installed:

    Hi...my problems related to this update are mainly with Internet Explorer 9 :-

    1. Unable to post to this forum
    2. Unable to attach to an email due to the attachment icon disappearing, but the link is still there when hovering over the area where it should appear, with a mouse
    3. No 'Reopen Last Session" in a new tab
    4. Loss of mail account access from the "MAIL" icon in tool bar
    5. Loss of "Facebook" quick view in tool bar
    6. slow and lockup of IE9 function
    7. Constant "sign in to account" in "live.com" and "Microsoft may contact you concerning this message"
    8. No sync with IE9 live account and Windows Live Mail account

    Removed this update and ask..."Did anyone do any testing before releasing this update???"

    System now functioning normally
