Windows Update KB2670838 may affect Windows Live Mail on Windows 7

On 26 February, an update called a platform update was released through Windows Update to coincide with the release of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7.  IE10 requires this update, which 'improves the features and performance' of a number of display components. Some users have found that the update affects the display of Windows Live Mail. Other problems ranging from blank screen in Resource Manager to Blue Screen of Death have been reported by users who found that the problem went away if the update was uninstalled.

If you are seeing this problem with Windows Live Mail, the first thing to do is to check with your graphics card/computer manufacturer for updated display drivers. If you're already using the latest, you may have to uninstall the update until a remedy is found. To do so, open Windows Update in Control Panel and click on Installed updates in the bottom left-hand corner. Locate the update, select it and click Uninstall. If this update was installed along with IE10, IE10 will also be uninstalled. If you have automatic updates configured, you should hide the update so it doesn't install again.

It might be helpful to the product team if those affected posted a reply to this thread explaining the symptoms and giving the make and model of their computer and its graphics card.

    1. I am now using IE10. I mentioned IE11 to Steve @ microsoft, but that was never addressed
    2. The new drivers were found on Intels' site, they are dated 08/18/2013 (Win64_152818.exe). They were found and installed on the 19th September by Sandeep(MS rep). They never showed up through the normal update platforms.
    3. Microsoft Bluetooth mouse 5000...I have used it exclusively for several months with this one particular laptop. Towards the end of the troubleshooting process the mouse would exhibit occasional hang-up on my email home page only. I could not get left click to work...it would "gray" the link I wanted to proceed to, but would not allow completion of the task. Refreshing the page would not correct this problem, nor would opening a new home page and trying to access the same link. The only way I could go forward when this hang-up occurred was to close down my home page and then reopen a new homepage, and log in without closing IE10. Right click on the mouse never exhibited any problems. Yet go to any other webpage which was open and the left button worked fine...go back to my email homepage and the same "gray" occurred! When a USB mouse was connected to the computer, this problem never surfaced! There were no updates available for the mouse, so it has been retired from service on this laptop. $35/40 for a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse /1 year of use!!..NOT A LONG LIFE(but still sold on Amazon)

    I agree 100% about the release of updates that do not plugin and need excessive support from the user to function. I use our computers mainly for productive work. This exercise should be billed back to MS, as I bill other venders. It is just shoddy knee jerk reactions, no thought given...remember MCI?

    Now I never install any "Update Tuesday" software until at least the following day after they are released...I check sites like this one to see what problems I am going to let into my workstations. and never install until there is a fix...point in question...the releases of updates to different versions of Office either last month or the previous month. If they should up...I just hide them in the update program until a fix is released. "We" should not be beta testing!

    And what is today...update Tuesday...what dysfunctional release will there be later today?

    Does 'clinched the deal' mean that you have IE10 installed without experiencing the earlier display problems following from the installation of KB2670838? How about IE11?

    Were these new Intel chipset drivers? And where does the Bluetooth mouse fit into the story?

    The really annoying thing about this case is that the troubleshooting you've been selflessly carrying out should have been started at Microsoft's (and NVidia's and AMD's) initiative last February. It shouldn't take a really squeaky wheel and six months to deal with a problem like this.

    ...this could and probably should be, a very long "book". After a few days I got a response from MS via an email from Adam, Advocacy Manager, "Customer and Field Advocacy Team" . I was then almost immediately contacted by Indian support. The guys name was Sandeep and very professional. After several weeks of calls and remote control and "playing" and using updates, patches and newly install, and uninstalled programs with the system...I now have one computer up and running and one to go! It would appear that a small percentage of the problem was a Microsoft Bluetooth 5000 mouse that was barely a year old, and newly released Intel drivers (released 08/18/2013) from their site which seems to have clinched the deal. The only problem I have "right now" after returning home for a few weeks... A desktop from HP running Win 7 64bit ......has the same issues!! But I am not going to let that get me down..."right now"!

    ...email sent Thursday afternoon(UK time) with no response at this point. I am skeptical I/we will ever receive a reply...Does anyone have access to emails for the Board of Directors?
