Original Title: What is this delay in starting Windows 8????
When I turn on my laptop, instead of immediately going to the start page of windows 8, my screen is black with the Dell logo, and a message to the left that says 'Start PXE over IPv4'. after a good while it then says 'FXE-E18 Server Response Timeout'. then after another while, it says 'Start PXE over IPv6'. then after another minute or more wait it says, 'FXE-E16 no offer received', and the little spinning balls start spinning and the start page finally shows up? What is this delay in 'connection (it's probably a good 3 minutes, maybe more)? What does this mean?

Thank you for your kind words, although I think a few on here might disagree with you. Sometimes a simple 2 or 3 sentence answer is more useful than links, screen grabs and pages of information.
Having made the hard disk the 1st boot device if you ever need to boot from DVD just press the F12 key and you get a one time boot device selector, far easier than changing things in the BIOS.

Was solved thankfully, turns out it was the internal hard drive that was damaged. Got a new wd 2 tb, installed the windows 8 pro i have even before getting new pc, which didnt even fit with old one, no natter tge number of tries. Wasnt asked for product key cause i log in olus downloaded Microsoft account app, problem solved.
My Lenovo Y50 Laptop is new, about 3 months or so. Yesterday, my laptop went on a black state with a phrase on top saying "start PXE over ipv4" Then I thought of turning it back off and on again. It restarted but it became very very slow. Before, it takes about 20 seconds to bring up to the login screen. The average time after it occured is now 35 seconds or sometimes 40. I did what you said, but the system is awefully slow. Any ideas? Thanks!
Managed to fix it, the true issue internal hdd. Installed windows 8pro i have since 2013, downloaded Microsoft account, wasn't ask to input product key, perhaps cause i log in, or Microsoft account app.
It may have always been enabled but due to the BIOS boot sequence never been invoked.
So for example a common sequence would be CD/DVD > USB > HDD > LAN.
In normal circumstances HDD will claim the boot because the CD or USB ports will not have bootable devices. There is a timeout limit so if the disk did not respond quick enough boot will pass on to the next device i.e. LAN
If this happens unexpectedly you need to check the configured sequence. If wrong it may just indicate the battery is getting low that maintains CMOS.
In practice PXE or Boot from LAN requires specific network facilities which few have certainly not in a small network. As well as defining the sequence to put LAN boot last the network card should have the option to disable PXE altogether.
