It all seems very strange but today when I turned on the computer a completely different screen came up, with the windows desktop and all of my items saved on the desktop were gone.  When I tried to open Firefox it was as if it was the first time I had used it asking if I wanted import bookmarks.  I was also asked in a prompt if I wanted to take the windows tour.  /

It sounds like a temporary profile was assigned to you when you first logged on and your normal profile was assigned the second time. This happens when Windows cannot read your real profile for some reason such as file system corruption or disk read failure.

I would run a chkdsk /r after booting to the recovery console with a Windows XP CD, run it repeatedly until it finds no errors (it is likley to take hours each time). If you don't have an XP CD let us know and we will tell you how to burn a disk that will let you. Contributor ElderL has loads of posts about chkdsk /r if you want to search for one of them.

    Hiya Elizabeth,

Glad we have at least established that it is clean.

I have posted the link to the new thread in the xp forum. I turned off and on again and now back to normal.

    Regards

    Phil

At least you know your system is clean, :)

This is really strange that we cannot find a fix.

DO NOT do a repair install, unless your cd is at sp3, it will repair to sp2 and everything gets messed up

If you wish I can supply some sites and instructions.

I have been following the thread, and it appears that other than Java, (which I have uninstalled on my pc), there is not a problem, you might post back to ask if this is so, and he wants you to post in the windows forum to see if your properties problem can get solved there.

I tried to reply with a link to this thread here but that thread is just for you and nasdaq, I could not reply.

Therefore explain this in your next reply and provide a link to this thread, as this is a different person from your first post with bleeping.

explain also that I sent you there as a last resort before I suggest a clean install.
