Also experienced this phenomena with two pc's at the same client location
Sorry Suzan, working from memory (but have a full system info report to work with)
Windows Automatic Updates, critical updates only, not set to install or download recommended updates or drivers either.
System restore and/or uninstalling last nights updates fixed all the problems encountered.
Turned OFF automatic updates until we have the 'fixes'
The systems are Windows 7 x64, ASUS clones from 2011 and all original drivers from 2011
Symptoms:
Some 3rd party apps fail to launch 'application error 0xc0000005' (Google Updater / Chrome etc. etc.)
Internet Explorer, System Info, Computer Properties all just don't open, no error msg.
Several background services fail to 'start in a timely fashion, timeout 3000 ms', even when attempting to start manually

Only ONE critical warning remains in the log's after being restored, and it's been there forever

The following fatal alert was generated: 10. The internal error state is 10.
Leaning towards these issues:
Microsoft Security Essentials
Google Chrome
Win VNC
Out-Of-Date software (Java?)
Out of date drivers with perhaps an Invalid digital signature somewhere.
After the system restore I was able to collect system info:
I'm sending Susan the full System.NFO via EMAIL

I manually installed all of the other non-security related updates from last night successfully (including the IE10 patch)
After installing ONLY these Security Updates things went wrong.
