Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash

I had this issue too, and found a couple of workarounds.

You can solve it simply by disabling thumbnails, but this stops thumbnails for images, which I find quite useful.

I am ruining a Intel SATA 3 motherboard, 16GBs of memory, and a water cooled Nvidia GeForce GTX 590 video card.  My power supply is made by PC Power and Cooling. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate.

I had my 3D problem referred to Second Tier tech support at Microsoft. At first, I was told I have viruses and such.  As I run two or more anti virus programs at least twice a day, I did not believe this, but I let Microsoft run Viperescue, TDDSSKiller, Esetsmartin Hitmanpro_36X-64, and Malwarebites.  I still had my problem.

Then I was told I needed to have Windows 7 installed again as one of my programs corrupted Windows.  So that was done.  I still had the problem.  So I was told that I needed to create a new "user" ID which they did.  That did not fix the problem.

I had the following issues:

1. 3D files would not copy from one part of my hard drive to another - they would just hang.
2. If I went in and out of "computer" or "Control Panel" a few times, when I went back in they were blank - empty.
3. I received out of memory errors and had to reboot often.

After working with the Second Tier Microsoft tech, and letting him do all of the above,  I suggested it might be a Microsoft problem and that maybe it could be fixed if we un installed KB2670838, and did not upgrade to IE 10 (I am running IE 9).

After the Second Tier Microsoft repair person un installed KB2670838 and rebooted, all of my problems went away.  He re installed KB2670838 the trouble came back.

It was only then that he was convinced that is was a Microsoft problem.  I pointed him to this Microsoft discussion forum where Microsoft said "it is a virus".  He finally agreed with me that it was a Microsoft issue.

I told him the 3D community has been trying to alert Microsoft to this issue since at least April of 2013 (if not earlier), and it is now Dec of 2013.  And to date, Microsoft says it is not a problem with it's KB267083 update or IE 10.

The Second Tier Microsoft guy and I worked from about 10:30 AM one day, to about 6PM that night (while everything else was tried), and then we worked again a second day for a couple of hours.

He told me he would write it up and forward this information.  But he said Microsoft has no ability to get back to him if they found a fix, or if they decide to blow him off or not.  He can only send it up the line.

This is extremely poor service from Microsoft.  When 100s of people on 3D forums all over the world find and describe this problem to Microsoft and they blow all of us off by telling us we have a virus, it drives us to Apple.

I was lucky that I had a knowledgeable Microsoft Second Tier support person who knows how to read error logs and was able to see the problem himself and was able to see what happened when KB267038 and IE 10 was removed.  He was logged into my computer the entire time (both days).

He was frank with me in telling me that he will never know the outcome of this. 

All I can say to Microsoft is that if you wonder why we are moving to ubuntu or OSX, this is one reason why.  Your company is like a dinosaur and moves slowly to fix problems, if at all.  Shame on you.

Do the right thing.  Fix this issue and post here when you have a solution.

Well said mraroid.  You were more persistent than me.  But the solution was identical.  Later, however, IE10 did install... and the KD....838 was not installed, and my 3D memory loss continued to stay away.  I'm suspicious that it is 100% MS... since I know other Windows users who don't have the problem, and work with 3D files.

About 2 years ago, I found that I had so many codecs installed on my Windows 7 box, it was causing trouble. On my own, I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and only then installed one additional codec. And that was done with the direction of tech support at Sony Vegas Pro 12.

So I can see a person now and then being able to work with out issue from KB2670838. It could be possible. You make a good point.

But when 1000s of people from many different 3D forms from around the world have the very same issue, and can fix it by removing KB2670838, you just have to wonder.

I edit *MASSIVE* 2D digitized 16mm motion picture film files on my machine with out any memory issues. But as soon as I put a 71MB (not GB) AVI file on my computer and windows 7 breaks, I have to wonder. And where did this AVI file come from? A Toshiba 3D digital video camera I bought. This was not some black market copy of Avatar I am taking about. Most (all?) of the posts I have seen are from people who are making 3D video from profession and consumer grade Sony, Canon, and other 3D camcorders. I would think Microsoft would want to know this. But they seem to turn a deft ear to it.

Maybe my Second Tier tech support guy at Microsoft can get some one's attention. I forgot to mention that he had me erase a lot of software while testing with me. He only left stuff that he thought was "safe". This was CS3, Sony Vegas Pro 12, other Adobe products like reader, flash, Firefox and Chrome, and a few other well known software items.

I think if the majority of the people have broken computers after a Microsoft update, and only a few do not, Microsoft should look into it.

But so far, they have decided not to.

This never happened to me using FCP. Apple was quick to respond to issues. And when they did not have an answer, I received email and updates, until a fix was made.

I am the first to admit that Jobs has some serious issues, but at least his company knows what customer service is. If FCP rendered 3D in 2K I would not be using Windows.

This update has caused so much frustration and wasted so much time. And over half a year later still no solution. Not even awareness among the tech support. The mention of 3D files should have rang a bell at the tech support. Or how many memory errors connected with 3D files are there exactly?! Is this typically for malware to act only if there are 3D files?

Guess where googling for
