Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash

Hi.

First of all, I apologize for my English. I am from Brazil, and just "felt" on this topic with a Google search. And I did not read all answers to check if the problem is solved, I just want to help with something I got here today.

In my case, the problem appears to be with thumbnails generation, like some of you wrote here, but I don't work with 3D videos here, only 2D, most MP4 and MKV encoding. The main problem were the codecs I have installed here. I don't know wich ones you have, but is a good idea to uninstall them, restart your PC, use CCleaner to clean thumbnail cache and junk files. After that open Task Manager and check if the process is running. If it is not, just try to install the codecs again and check if there are newer versions of them.

I hope it was usefull in any way.

To recap the issue:

The dllhost can eat up all memory till the system crashes. This could have several causes, one is a bug in the thumbnailsystem. If the deactivation of the thumbnailsystem can fix the memory leak, you know for sure. (One would probably have to reboot or kill the process to see any changes)

The update KB2670838 which also gets installed along with IE10 (!) has several side effects. One of them is the introduction of a memory leak when trying to generate a thumbnail for certain mp4 files, typically 3D Side by Side. Search for files which should have a thumbnail but have a standard icon (the current file causing the leak will also be unmoveable, undeleteable etc). The thumbnail cache plays a role in this too. If you have valid thumbnails for a file and install an update or codecs or would like to test this, there will be no error till the next time the thumbnail is actually created.

It is possible, that there are other causes for these problems as well and it is possible that not all systems are prone to that memory leak. Other side effects of the update point to a combo of intel and amd hardware.

As for my system, there is no combo, only amd here. And either hiding the 3D-mp4 (rename so no thumb will be generated) or deinstalling KB2670838 works. Because yet another side effect of this update broke functions of my tv card software, I prefer to not install the update. There is KB2834140, an update to the update, which was aimed to repair other errors caused by KB2670838 but this did nothing to the issue with thumbnails.

Yes Simon I agree Same setup AMD only and Same problem and fix.

Eventually MS will put out an alternate to KB2670838 that really addresses the issue We all seem to have.

The below options you too can try , I tested and working fine with my Win 7 64 bit OS.

 

Said issue was exists with my machine and trying to find a solution as this cannot be cleared up by re-installation of OS / any Malware check / Antivirus Tool scanning.

 

However this has been resolved ultimately with Installation of Media Preview  64 Bit.

 

Now am completely free from this long term headache .....!!!!!

 

Steps to be followed

 

1: Download the tool from http://www.babelsoft.net/products.htm#download according to the OS versions.

 

2: Install it & Reboot your machine.

 

This will give you a total freedom from dllhost.exe max memory utilization and deadlock .......!!!!

 

 

 

While a multi codec pack may help some people It wont and did not help Me I make and edit My own videos and the codecs I use have encoders and decoders.

Over writing them with a decoder codec pack will and did knock out My encoder's

I guess the rest of us will just have to avoid KB2670838 update and its biz as normal.

By the way I am glad to hear that it was just a codec problem with your system.

1. Why does dllhost.exe consume 100% of system resources with thumbnails enabled?  Why does Microsoft have an answer place for us (users, not MS code writers) to ask and answer each others questions and to solve problems in the OS?  Why are we forced to discuss this among ourselves as paying customers to this company?  I paid over $120 bux for a $2 DVD data disc copy of this operating system with it's own key and activation, and Microsoft has the original code open and ready to fix.  They certainly don't waste any time on sending out patches that help verify if you bought this software and I did!
2. I can't tell you how many people in this thread try to come across as experts in saying "run a system scan for viruses and system file checker and clean your thumbnail cache" Like I didn't do that in the first place .. It's silly at this point. This last person wants me to install some third party Chinese media viewer.
3. If your car is broken,  car manufacturers don't send you to a place to discuss your problems with other of the same car owners that are all having the same problem.  They apply the necessary fix.  This is the same thing, but except the hood is permanently locked on the car and you cannot see what is going on inside to diagnose why this problem is occurring and certainly cannot go in .  I'm pretty sure Microsoft doesn't even know Windows 7 64 bit is broken like this, not would they like to allocate resources to fixing it.
4. I will tell you this, this problem is discussed in at least a thousand other threads around the world and that I still haven't found a genuine fix for this, and I don't know who to get hold of at Microsoft to open the hood and look inside and fix the problem.  Microsoft, please help.

Yes.  This is what is happening to my system as well.  My PC can no longer generate previews for 3D videos, flat videos, or even Word documents.  Updates often cause problems.  Stupid problems like allowing endless loops seem to be the source of this problem.

I have spent days chasing this, and my 3D video efforts are at a standstill.  I can sure see why 3D has not meet the expectations of the TV manufacturers, content produces, or broadcasters; the people that hope to make the profits have not built the infrastructure.  They hope that someone else will do the necessary work.  That does not seem to be happening.  I doubt if Microsoft will rise to the occasion either.  I have come to believe that Windows is too complex now to be reliable.

If we want to kill creativity all we have to do is take the fun out of using a computer.  Good job, Microsoft.  Ignore us and we will go away.  Great business model.

I altso removed the 2670838, and it works for me! My****explorer 10, was altso gone, and insted  I now have IE9 and my computer is working OK again. Thanks 1000 times,  - and shame on you microsoft !!
