Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash.

It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.

It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.

So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.

By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.

What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.

Fix

"MS are aware of problems with certain chipset/driver combinations and the KB2670838 update

They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install

They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.

The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."

So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.

Thanks... yes the thumbnails cause the problem... and only for 3D MP4 files created by my Sony camera. Sad that MS vetting of "improvements" cripple a system.

Same here: new Panasonic and Sony 3D files cause the leak. Old 2D files do not. And this just started about a week ago. Only problem is with MP4 3D files.

I don't think it is entirely MS fault ever since the Digital rights movement (DRM) they have had to patch a multitude of files I guess We can blame the media thieves for making all of Our lives more difficult.

They will work it out sooner or later.

What I ended up doing is moving the 3D files to a new folder and setting the folder to show details.

It allows me to at least work with 1 file at a time, I just need to remember to kill the process when done.

I found a solution but it makes windows not so secure.

I did a reformat and fresh install and did not allow windows update, so far so good.

Being as I did not let updates happen the system is at risk on the net.

So I'm guessing that there is nothing wrong with my PC gear and it has to be some thing with the OS after security updates.

I have read on other help sites they are turning off UAC and it seems to fix the bug, my problem with that is it makes a large gap in system security.

I have installed all my favorite codec's supporting *.mov *.QT *.flv *.mp4 *.Mpeg *.avi *.ogg and so on

still no problems.

Wish me luck.

Ok guys I let widows auto update and the problem returned, so it seems at least for my setup that a security update has changed how the thumbnail creation works.

I'm guessing sooner or later it will be fixed by another security update.

Try these if you have not done so far:

Important: Always create backup of your files.

Check your disk for errors

Done good to go.

Use windows memory diagnostic tool to check for memory problems.

Check your hard drive see if it is not failing? You should normally have hardware diagnostic tools in your pc provided by your PC manufacturer.

Done good to go. I am the builder, but my SSD came with diagnostic tools and is SMART capable.

Disable thumbnails in windows from folder options, see if it still crashes without them?

When I disable thumbnails the problem does not appear.

Make sure that your battery or power supply is working properly.

To determine and identify the program that is causing the problem. Normally dllhost.exe runs under it.

dllhost.exe runs thumbcache.dll.

Well, I would suggest the followings :
1. Try clearing/resetting the thumbnail cache. This can be done using the Disk Clean up tool if you have not done.
2. Uninstall any media player or codec files (Divx, VLC , Roxio anything you can) installed on pc see if that solves the problem? (including Windows Media Player, Turn it off temporarily through turn on or turn off windows features in control panel > Uninstall programs then it is on the left hand menu. ) after that you might just consider to use VLC media player only as it plays any types of files.
3. Alternatively you will require windows installation disc to repair the file if it is damaged. (Not sure as SFC results were OK)
At the moment that is all I can think of.

Last thing, you might consider to check:

Also check device manager hidden drivers .... You can view them using view menu then select show hidden devices then check for any danger signs on any driver ... If there were any then try fixing them by updating or uninstalling them then restart your PC.
