Why does dllhost.exe  Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash.

It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.

It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.

So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.

By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.

What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.

Fix

"MS are aware of problems with certain chipset/driver combinations and the KB2670838 update

They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install

They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.

The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."

So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.

    Do you own a camera or process images or videos? How many TB of drive space do you use to backup files? Do you ever wonder what those files look like? Have you turned your thumbnails off? Do you find this convenient? Do you have a dry sense of humor?

    Really, it all has to work to progress. I trashed expensive working installations of carefully tuned bleeding edge software to try and fix this stupid ****. ANd I still have to go back and repair that. 3D videos are complex enough that one can not limp along and get anywhere. The thumbnails are back, WMP opens the 3D files and I am well rid of that update - it was a poison pill!

    First of all end the Com surrogate process from task manager

    Now what is Com surrogate

    Com surrogate is associated with tumbnail preview.

    solution:--

     If you disables thumbnail preview the problem would be solved.

     You will find it in the --- advanced system settings/performance tab.

    I altso removed the 2670838, **and it works for me!**My **** explorer 10, was altso gone, and insted  I now have IE9 and my computer is working OK again. Thanks 1000 times,  - and shame on you microsoft !!

    This was the problem with my computer too.  Thanks to those who dug in to fix the problem that Microsoft has ignored for some time.  I am sure that they got reporting from my computer and many others that flagged this issue and then failed to correct their updates.

    Yes.  This is what is happening to my system as well.  My PC can no longer generate previews for 3D videos, flat videos, or even Word documents.  Updates often cause problems.  Stupid problems like allowing endless loops seem to be the source of this problem.

    I have spent days chasing this, and my 3D video efforts are at a standstill.  I can sure see why 3D has not meet the expectations of the TV manufacturers, content produces, or broadcasters; the people that hope to make the profits have not built the infrastructure.  They hope that someone else will do the necessary work.  That does not seem to be happening.  I doubt if Microsoft will rise to the occasion either.  I have come to believe that Windows is too complex now to be reliable.

    If we want to kill creativity all we have to do is take the fun out of using a computer.  Good job, Microsoft.  Ignore us and we will go away.  Great business model.
