Why does dllhost.exe  Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash.

It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.

It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.

So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.

By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.

What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.

Fix

"MS are aware of problems with certain chipset/driver combinations and the KB2670838 update

They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install

They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.

The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."

So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.

    3D is the culprit.  And I also keep both Panasonic and Sony developers on my "failure to act" list.  They and **CIPA**introduced a new file format - MPO - without fully vetting it on MS products.  MS probably netted $50 or less on my OEM OS.  They netted many times more.

    The two 3D cameras which claimed to operate just fine with Win 7 do not.  Bask in my day of testing drivers for another company,  we spent extensive time testing on the current OS, and if the OS developer continued to release changes, we, as the hardware mfg, would retest, and make adjustments, if needed.

    Summary: we should engage CIPA as well.

    Now, Windows Update give me Explorer 11, and My : dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash again ! **** MICROSOFT. - Well I removed the update, explorer 9 was back, and everything works again.

    I fixed mine by changing my folder from showing "thumbnails' to showing "Icons only"

    If i want thumbnail I have to change it back .

    but while i am showing icons i don't have the same problems dllhost

    It was only then that he was convinced that is was a Microsoft problem.  I pointed him to this Microsoft discussion forum where Microsoft said "it is a virus".  He finally agreed with me that it was a Microsoft issue.

    I told him the 3D community has been trying to alert Microsoft to this issue since at least April of 2013 (if not earlier), and it is now Dec of 2013.  And to date, Microsoft says it is not a problem with it's KB267083 update or IE 10

    You are my hero!

    This update has caused so much frustration and wasted so much time. And over half a year later still no solution. Not even awareness among the tech support. The mention of 3D files should have rang a bell at the tech support. Or how many memory errors connected with 3D files are there exactly?! Is this typically for malware to act only if there are 3D files?

    Guess where googling for

    windows out of memory error 3d mp4

    takes me. But then again, this is how I found this thread in the first place: googling for the exploding dllhost

    Thank you for your post David....

    About 2 years ago, I found that I had so many codecs installed on my Windows 7 box, it was causing trouble. On my own, I did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate, and only then installed one additional codec. And that was done with the direction of tech support at Sony Vegas Pro 12.

    So I can see a person now and then being able to work with out issue from KB2670838. It could be possible. You make a good point.

    But when 1000s of people from many different 3D forms from around the world have the very same issue, and can fix it by removing KB2670838, you just have to wonder.

    I edit *MASSIVE* 2D digitized 16mm motion picture film files on my machine with out any memory issues. But as soon as I put a 71MB (not GB) AVI file on my computer and windows 7 breaks, I have to wonder. And where did this AVI file come from? A Toshiba 3D digital video camera I bought. This was not some black market copy of Avatar I am taking about. Most (all?) of the posts I have seen are from people who are making 3D video from profession and consumer grade Sony, Canon, and other 3D camcorders. I would think Microsoft would want to know this. But they seem to turn a deft ear to it.

    Maybe my Second Tier tech support guy at Microsoft can get some one's attention. I forgot to mention that he had me erase a lot of software while testing with me. He only left stuff that he thought was "safe". This was CS3, Sony Vegas Pro 12, other Adobe products like reader, flash, Firefox and Chrome, and a few other well known software items.

    I think if the majority of the people have broken computers after a Microsoft update, and only a few do not, Microsoft should look into it.

    But so far, they have decided not to.

    This never happened to me using FCP. Apple was quick to respond to issues. And when they did not have an answer, I received email and updates, until a fix was made.

    I am the first to admit that Jobs has some serious issues, but at least his company knows what customer service is. If FCP rendered 3D in 2K I would not be using Windows.
