Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash

Creating a new user profile, I didn't see the dllhost.exe showing up anymore. But I only created it for a couple of days.

I'm also curious if this is a virus or a defect of windows update.

There is also a virus files that gets infected and we can see so many dllhost.exe task running in the task manager. None of the antivirus software identified this.

I have downloaded ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe file and it has removed that.

Ok, it's over a year and I'm having a serious issue with this dllhost.exe com surrogate.  What's the latest? This morning 10/25/2014 - when I signed on to my PC, the wall paper was gone and all of the items pinned to my task bar threw a message that it had been removed or deleted...  There are several dllhost.exe com surrogate processes running and I need an explanation in basic terms.  These processes pop up when I open any browser - Chrome, Safari (I don't use IE, waaay too slow). And my PC performance starts deteriorating. I have to right-click and end the process... sometimes, ending one cancels them all, sometimes I have to go one-by-one, sometimes there's one that won't allow me to kill it and I'm the admin on this machine.

I read that dllhost.exe com surrogate is a virus that hides behind the legitimate dllhost.exe so that virus checkers can't find it. I've also read that it's not a virus ... I don't know what to believe.  All I know is I didn't always have this problem and other users on my PC (son, hubby) are not having this issue with their accounts.  Can someone please explain and offer advice in plain simple language.  BTW - already checked for KB2670838 in Uninstall Programs; it's not there (am I looking in the right place?).  Thanks -

There is a solution to continuously kill dllhost.exe. You can find the vbs script you can run to actively kill it from the memory every 50 to 60 seconds.

Since vbs can be used to automate most tasks in windows through various degrees of complexity, this gave me an idea to write the below code:

We just have to copy this code and paste it into a text file (notepad !!) and save it as killdllhost.vbs. This creates a new silent sentinal in the running processes called wscript.exe which should take almost 2842K of memory and run every 60 seconds to kill dllhost.exe before it eats up the memory.

We can place this file in the startup folder to ensure it runs when Windows logs in so that we can ensure it silently keeps our computers memory intact during our daily activities.

It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.

It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.

So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.

By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.

What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.

They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install

They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.

The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."

So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.

Can someone explain in basic terms how to get rid of the dllhost.exe com surrogate process? Multiple processes start up - usually when I open a browser - google or safari (I don't use IE, waaay too slow).  I looked for KB2670838 in "Uninstall programs" - it's not there.  This morning (10/25/14) my wall paper was gone and all of the programs pinned to my task bar could not be found.  Additionally, my Libraries folder is completely empty!!! Please help.  I read that this is a virus that hides behind the legitimate dllhost.exe so it goes undetected.  Then I read that it is not a virus. I'm afraid to download the recommended PC Helpers/Fixers, etc because I don't trust the source. All I know is that the dllhost.exe com surrogate wasn't always present on my PC (at least I didn't notice it) and since I've noticed it, performance is deteriorating.  Other users on this PC do not have the problem with com surrogate - it only occurs when I - the admin - log on.  PLEASE HELP!
