Why does dllhost.exe Com surrogate consumes memory untill crash.
It happens when I highlight or view a folder containing video files, Even if I close the folder or select a different folder the memory keeps getting consumed.
It seems to happen mostly with 3D Video files but it has done the same with 2D files.
So it seems to be a problem with the windows thumb nail system dealing with these files.
By the way trying to delete or move the file or folder while the Com Surrogate is consuming memory Delete can not complete the task.
What I have been doing is finding offending file selecting Delete, then go to task manager stopping Com Surrogate, then the file will delete.
Fix
"MS are aware of problems with certain chipset/driver combinations and the KB2670838 update
They are also aware of problems with the IE10 install
They are working on both issues, and will update as and when they are satisfied that they have solved the problems.
The recommendation in the meantime is that if the update doesn't install first time, make sure it's uninstalled, and then hide it - Windows Update will unhide it when it is updated."
So Uninstall IE10 and KB2670838 update, hide them from auto updating when thy pop back up to be updated the problem should be fixed.

I have uninstalled IE 10 as well as 9. Also, the KB267 update. I still get the dllhost.exe loading on occaision. What the heck are we supposed to do to fix this problem? If you know the answer, please use simplyfied terms so non computer people can understand it. thank you.

Did you have any 3D movie (AVI, MOV, etc) files on your computer? Or did you have any external USB drives connected to your computer (USB 2.0 or 3.0)?
I did. I have 16GBs of memory in my SATA3 Windows Ultimate box. When I tried to access my external USB 3.0 drives, they would come up empty. I also had many different formats of 3D movie files on my computer.
My computer stopped DLLHOST from running wild when I removed the update called KB2670838.
While I like to select it, and tell it to never show up again, it is kind of like telling the Bing toolbar to never show up again. It keeps installing it self from time to time. But once removed, all of my problems were over. I also use Firefox. Also, I keep all of my motherboard chip set drives up to date (see your motherboard model number and search the internet for this), as well as keeping my HP drivers up to date and all of my windows security and non security updates up to date.
I have used and still recommend MSE to folks. But when trouble shooting this issue after it was kicked up to Microsoft second tier tech support, the tech (who was very good BTW) installed the free version of Malwarebytes on my computer. It worked so good, I ended up buying it which was less then $25.00.
Also, early on, the Microsoft second tier tech support guy thought the issues was viruses, malware, root kits, etc. So he also installed the free Vipre Rescue and ran it in safe more. Because I run security software of my own, he did not find anything. But, I think both products are very good, and I can recommend them to anyone. I do not know if I can post links here or not, but I will try. If the links do not work, just google "free Malwarebytes" and then google "viper Rescue" and down load the free one. One last note, Some viruses, Trojan horses, malware root kits etc, will let anti virus software remove them from your hard drive. But thy hid high in memory. If you boot to safe mode (hold down the F8 key when you boot), when you boot to safe mode, little memory is available for them to hide in.So you can usually kill them for good.

I had the cascading DLLHOST.exe problem where more than 20 copies start running simultaneously. Like many other people, I used so many strategies simultaneously, its hard to know which one worked. Here's the overall:
A) Stop using IE and move to Firefox
B) Stop using whatever internet protection and move to Kaspersky
C) Run the Microsoft Safety scanner
D) In case all fails and you dont have install disks, get MagicJellybean Keyfinder, download the ISO from digital River (ONLY OF THE SAME WINDOWS VERSION, NOT WHAT YOU WISH YOU HAD), decompress into a CD and install ONLY IF NEEDED.
There is no registry to delete or quick fix, you gotta start deleting things you recently installed. If you have a saved system restore point, go back to that with windows restore.
Try removing KB2670838 as well. After you uninstall it, be sure to go back to Microsoft Updates, and select this update and and hind it so you do not accidentally re install it.
This issue has been well documented and known to Microsoft for quite some time (over a year) but they still refuse to do *anything* about it.
I have no idea why.

More than a year has passed since it has happened to you ( William Hagenberger) and now it strikes me... I had downloaded a .mp4 file which unfortunately got corrupted due to interruption in the download and voila!.. There it was in the Task Manager eating up RAM memory and heating up the CPU - dllhost.exe... After some thorough research and thinking, I figured out that the best way to stop the dllhost.exe from consuming such enormous amounts of RAM must be to detect the file whose thumbnail it was trying to render. Luckily for me knew I which file it was... I deleted the file but couldn't delete it forever from the Recycle Bin despite using CCleaner which itself would hang. Therefore, I killed the process tree of dllhost.exe (dunno if it's safe but it anyways kept restarting), and deleted the file simply by right clicking the Recycle Bin in Desktop (where was my brains earlier?). The comp is working fine now and there are no noticeable lags.. The dllhost.exe file hasn't shown up on the Task Manager though I suspect it might return again if some other file gets corrupted or something... Oh and by the way I use a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC that has 4GB of RAM.
