I just can't figure out how to create desktop shortcuts for both Internet Explorer and Mail. It's awkward having to keep going to and fro from the Start Menu. Can anyone help please?

To create a desktop shortcut for any program, right-drag its exe
file to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button, and on the menu you
get, choose "Create shortcut here."

Bravo GregSB; many thanks for this. I was on the verge of asking my technical friend to wipe my new laptop clean and install windows 7. You've kept me in the windows 8 community, for now. You're posting in a W8 forum so I assume that you mean Start Screen, not Start Menu.
Then when you right-click the tile that you are interested in pinning to the Taskbar you will see that it is possible in the case of Internet Explorer but not possible in the case of Mail. That's because Mail is not a Desktop program. If you want to use your Mail from the Desktop you would need to use a different program, known as your default E-mail client. Alternatively, if your E-mail service is Hotmail you could create a pinned website Taskbar button for it.

Thank you for the reply.
I can get the IE icon in the taskbar but am wanting to place a shortcut on the desktop. I don't see that it's possible to drag from either the start screen or the taskbar to the desktop. I can't see that you can minimise either screen so that I'm able to drag icons from one to the other. Right clicking doesn't work either.
What I want is to place a shortcut for IE on the desktop.
I'll keep fiddling.
