I just can't figure out how to create desktop shortcuts for both Internet Explorer and Mail. It's awkward having to keep going to and fro from the Start Menu. Can anyone help please?

To create a desktop shortcut for any program, right-drag its exe
file to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button, and on the menu you
get, choose "Create shortcut here."

Bravo GregSB; many thanks for this. I was on the verge of asking my technical friend to wipe my new laptop clean and install windows 7. You've kept me in the windows 8 community, for now. The jury is still out though and, even though I've used pc and windows since UK launch (I worked for IBM at the time), my mac is still very much in use.

Usually that symptom means that Internet Explorer is unchecked in Windows Features. In that case iexplore.exe and its shortcuts would be hidden. Whatever it is that you are finding on the Taskbar then would be something else. Again, details would be required to test these ideas.
BTW this does not sound like a symptom related to the ones being discussed in this thread. It may be best to start your own thread with your details.
neither works, the iexplore does not take me to the web and cannot find the .exe file for Explorer in the Explorer folder, can get it on the task bar but not desktop
