I just can't figure out how to create desktop shortcuts for both Internet Explorer and Mail. It's awkward having to keep going to and fro from the Start Menu. Can anyone help please?

To create a desktop shortcut for any program, right-drag its exe
file to the desktop. Let go of the mouse button, and on the menu you
get, choose "Create shortcut here."

Bravo GregSB; many thanks for this. I was on the verge of asking my technical friend to wipe my new laptop clean and install windows 7. You've kept me in the windows 8 community, for now. The jury is still out though and, even though I've used pc and windows since UK launch (I worked for IBM at the time), my mac is still very much in use.
neither works, the iexplore does not take me to the web and cannot find the .exe file for Explorer in the Explorer folder, can get it on the task bar but not desktop
Really if after 30 years of using windows I have to go to forum to figure out how to populate my desktop with shortcuts something is already very wrong.
For me to find it is something I will not be able to explain to my dad over the phone means MSFT released a product that simply does not work for much of its existing user base.
How do I tell my dad it is safe to go in the water when I see users being swallowed whole and their feet hardly wet.
I always say avoid putting customers in a position where it is easy to say "no". Right now for many millions they are being faced with a choice.
1 learn a new Win OS that is getting bad press.
OR
2 Spend a little and try that Apple OS that everyone seems like.
Win8 had one job.
Just one job.
