This works for me in Windows 8.1 to fix this:

type "services" in the Windows search box

From the list of services, choose Windows Audio

Stop the service, then

Start the service

Sound now plays in Movie Maker.

    Hi!

I am running windows 10, and I experienced at lot of different problems with Movie Maker.

    No sound

sound file imported only lasted seconds -

I closed the program, but the process WMM ran in background, and wouldn't stop -

WMM process consumed a lot of CPU....    Frustrating.

I clicked on start, typed "movie", got icon in the list - rightclicked the icon - Choose "Run as Administrator".

    I'm holding my breath - it's still working...  :)
