This works for me in Windows 8.1 to fix this:

type "services" in the Windows search box

From the list of services, choose Windows Audio

Stop the service, then

Start the service

Sound now plays in Movie Maker.

This WMM problem happened to me too! Only one difference.

All audio from all programs DOE S NOT PLAY thru the headphone jack when i preview videos thru WMM.INSTEAD, it switches to my Toshiba TV's speakers, which is not what I want.

I usually restart my computer to fix it, but i don't want to do that anymore. I want to fix it without restarting. I did that once, but i can't remember how i did it.

    HELP!!!

EDIT: I have tried the Playing Audio troubleshooter and it didn't find anything. I looked at the device manager and all of the sound cards are working fine.  (NVIDIA HD Audio Manager and Realtek HD Audio Manager)

    Another "solution":

right-click on a blank spot  of the task bar > Start Task Manager > Services tab > sort by name > AudioSrv (Windows Audio) > right click on it and select RESTART.  Takes about 10 sec.

Unfortunately you have to do this every time you start a project or reload.  It's a workaround for an obvious bug in WMM.

    Hello @doubleosix, @Michele13 and GeoffThorpe,

Welcome to Microsoft Community Forum. First, I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to your post.

As for your inquiry, if you were not able to find codecs for your audio/video, we suggest that you convert the file to .WMV as previously suggested. .WMV is the most compatible video file format for Movie Maker.

If you have other inquiries regarding Movie Maker, please let us know. We'll be here to provide assistance.

    Thank you.
