This works for me in Windows 8.1 to fix this:
type "services" in the Windows search box
From the list of services, choose Windows Audio
Stop the service, then
Start the service
Sound now plays in Movie Maker.

Hello Barbara,

For your inquiry about Media Info, we would like to inform you that the program is safe to use.
Media info will be able to identify any issue with missing or faulty codecs and whether it's already in your computer or not: **Media Info**
As for the Mediainfo, please follow the steps provided below on how to use the program:
As for converting your video file, unfortunately, we cannot provide a video converter. We suggest that you look on the web for these types of programs.
Let us know the results afterwards.
Thank you.
I am having the same problem. I have a Samsung phone, video format 3g2, it is one of the formats listed that Movie Maker accepts. These videos play fine in QUick Time player, audio is there, but when I try playing them with Windows Media Player, or edit them in MOvie Maker, there is no audio. I do not understand where to look for codecs, and I am hesitant to download Media Info, not sure it is safe.
What name of codec should i be looking for and where? Tell me how to search for codecs in the computer.
you also suggest to convert videos to wmv format. how do you do that?
thank you.
I have found the cause of my problem.
I did not wait for the audio data to load before previewing, hence the bug.
I will test the solution above out and post my findings within the line below.
So far I can't make the problem happen. I will try the solution out when I get into the problem again and post my responses in a P.S.
Thank you so much.
P.S. IT WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKED
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Another "solution":
right-click on a blank spot of the task bar > Start Task Manager > Services tab > sort by name > AudioSrv (Windows Audio) > right click on it and select RESTART. Takes about 10 sec.
Unfortunately you have to do this every time you start a project or reload. It's a workaround for an obvious bug in WMM.
This worked for me...Thanks!
