ISO image mounting problems under Windows 8 Pro

Whenever I try to mount ISO with the inbuilt mounting of Windows 8 Pro it returns 'Couldn't mount  file' 'Sorry there was a problem mounting the file' or 'The disc image file is corrupted'.

In some instances the file gets mounted nevertheless, but to discover it, I have to look at Computer where all drives are shown.

In either instances, whenever I drop an ISO, which contains audio from SACD or other media, in J River Media Center's 'Playing Now' field, it shows every single track of the disc image file and plays them nicely. So it does, even when burnt onto a DVD+R So, obviously, the ISOs are healthy and the problem should with Windows...

The file needs to be renamed to .exe on the Microsoft site.  It's an executable, not an ISO

(Visio 2013 64 bit English)

ok guys, I FOUND THE SOLUTION by accident.

Here is how to fix the problem (at least it worked right away when i did it, so try it!)

RIGHT-CLICK the image file in question (.IMG, .ISO, etc...) and choose a default program to open with. WIndows ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO BE the DEFAULT program to open image files. There is a unreported bug about Windows 8 explorer not being the default , therein not opening a valid, uncorrupted image file.  YOU MUST set Windows Explorer as the default in order to mount image files as a virtual DVD drive in WIndows 8.

Here what I did, eject SD card (you don't have to take it out of the computer).  Try to mount again.  I did this and it worked perfectly.

    I found an answer by mistake... and tested it... and works.  For whatever reason, I can't install using the .img file that was originally downloaded.  Same issue as everyone else in this thread.

    So before I start meddling with WinZip, MagicISO and the like, I copied the .img file to a USB Drive.  I go to try/test the same install from the USB drive, on a different computer.. and it WORKS!

    So I went back to the computer that had issues, and installed form the USB drive... it WORKED.

    I guess there is a flag or something on the original that gets wiped or isnt' copied.  Try simply copying the .img file and use it.  Worked for me... have no idea why but it worked.

    yes, works one way or another, if explorer.exe is only default in registry for open *.iso

    The process you are describing is called extracting, not mounting. Just about everyone who knows how to properly use an .iso file knows how to extract it. Mounting, however, provides more options than extracting does. Also, your suggestion says we should use a different program, and this entire thread is for finding out the problem with our native explorer.exe program.

    its been a LONG time since windows update or unknown causes, changed the default for *.iso away from explorer.exe, here. Used to be common issue. Windows 8.1 pro 64 with media center, here.

    the Lord (of software) giveth lol.

    But taketh also: all icons for ie favorites disappeared; new ones work but ie insists (1) that the name of each favorite AS DISPLAYED be *.url (new behavior) (2) that to open a link as a new tab ALWAYS requires the context menu (used to be, many things in particular my web based email account, a click on the link opened ink in new tab).

    VERY upset with MS today...told repeatedly before and after 8.1 GA release, supported for 90 days on upgrade upgrade from 8.0l different story today lol.

    I'd purely prefer the micky-mouse mount issue...where I git that error message but in fact the *.iso was indeed mounted as a virtual drive.
