Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

Ron

After using CCleaner it happened to me, appdata files are missing as of today. Gadgets worked fine until now.

I think this is what caused my weather gadget to stop working again after fixing it. Curious how many other people that have done the fix and had the weather gadget stop working again are using CCleaner?

I had thought CCleaner might be the reason my weather gadget stops working.  One time I remember the gadget stopped working soon after I ran CCleaner.  However I never lost any files as was reported in another post.   I was able to find the Config.xml file and again resave it to make the gadget work.

I then paid particular attention and I have run CCleaner many times without effecting the weather gadget.  So in my case I don't think CCleaner is causing the issue.  I will say that I have many items unchecked on CCleaner, meaning I do not use the default settings.  So if you (and anyone else) is sure it is breaking the gadget it may be worth figuring out which parameter is causing it.

First of all, thank you very much for documenting the solution. I don't understand the problem either, but I have some observations to add.

In my case, I have two copies of the gadget running (Win 7, 32-bit). Both morphed into giving me the forecast, rather than the current weather conditions. Uninstalling one and reinstalling it produced the "Cannot connect to service" caption. The other continued to give me the forecast.

I did diffs on the files, and the settings.ini files were identical, while the changes in the .xml files seem trivial.

Adding the weather gadget to another user account on the same machine yielded the "Cannot connect" gadget.

I did the repair process stepwise.

I replaced the \cache\168522d5-1082-4df2-b2f6-9185c31f9472\.xml* files first, and the forecast gadget returned to normal operation after a restart. The "Cannot connect" gadget was unchanged. I don't know if the restart was necessary, or if I was just too careful/impatient.

I next replaced the config.xml file. The "Cannot connect" gadget returned to normal operation; no restart required.

I installed another copy of the gadget for a third location, and it also worked normally. Based on that, I doubt that malformation of the _wc-GMX*_.xml files are the problem.

Hint; I copied the files from another user account on the same machine, where the gadgets were working as expected; no second machine was required.

As a guess, the problem is related to a recent Windows update. The user account with the failing gadgets was the account in use at the time of the last automatic update, and the first account to be logged on after the update was completed and processed.

I can't reconcile that with the fact that your solution is two years old, and I just recently acquired the problem. Before that, the gadgets worked as expected on my machine (including activation on the "donor" account used in this process).

Whatever information corruption is responsible, it must exist in the template used to generate the first gadget of an account. Subsequent incarnations extend or copy the existing configuration files.

Your problem sounds similar to the one I've had and haven't been able to correct.  My weather gadgets can't connect but in addition, I noticed my hearts program animation button is shaded which does not allow me to change the speed of the card movements.  Also, the other day, when I tried to load my Adobe reader to read a PDF file, I couldn't; a dialog box came up and notified me that it could not find the files.  I checked them and they were fine.  In addition, I uninstalled the Adobe reader and downloaded it again and installed it -- the same dialog box came up when I tried to access it.  Obviously, something in the operating system is amiss and I don't know what.  I hate to have to try using the Microsoft repair cd that came with my computer since I fear I will lose all my personal files and programs.

I bought two computers last year with Windows 7 (a desktop and a laptop).  Everything appears to be working fine with the laptop even though I've installed the Microsoft updates the same as the desktop. In another post I made on this website, I mentioned I hired a local "expert" to come over and fix my problem.  He left after 2 hours and charging me $100 and accomplished nothing meaningful but pontificate how I shouldn't have Spybot on my computer with Microsoft Security Essentials since they will clash with each other and thereupon uninstalled Microsoft Essentials. (I don't know about that but intend to find out more on this issue later.)

Where do we go from here? I think I'm going to try to restore my computer to last march period before all these things began going wrong. My other last-ditch effort will be to contact Microsoft Technical help and pay the $149 dollar fee for a year's technical help, but what I've gathered here on this site is they weren't able to help either.

Anyone with any more ideas, let me  know since I'm at my wits end on this problem.

    Fred
