Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

Ron

    Hello bru20,

I did not see that post earlier. Honestly I didn't try an exhaustive search. However, I did not have to modify anything at all. But, it's all good information, the more the better. Thanks for the post.

It is getting confusing.  Especially when people keep posting about copying files from a working machine.  While that seems to work the other fix is much simpler whether changing the values in the Config.xml file or just resaving it.

    Dear Karen Deep,

I and my wife have the same issue: "Weather gadget not working- Cannot connect to service".

I see by your the date of your  MS Community Question, that this probably began sometime in January 2015, last month. This same problem occurred to us in January 2015. I have a Dell Laptop, and she has an Asus Notebook. I have Windows 7 Home Premium OS, she has Windows 7 Starter OS. We use the same wireless router, via AT&T here in Mississippi.

I see by other replies here that this is apparently Microsoft's doing, and being that my wife and I have different PC machines and OS's, I am betting that there's nothing wrong with all three (3) of our "machines", yours, mine, or my wife's.

I like you, am always concerned when something goes wrong with my PC, as I cannot afford to pay for Microsoft Support, or Dell Support Services.

Just thought that you'd like to know that you are not alone with this concern. I would add that you can get other FREE "real time" weather from Web-sites. I have three (3)  THE Weather Channel via www.weather.com  , AccuWeather via  www.acuuweather.com  , and WeatherBug via www.weatherbug.com  . I did not "install desktops, toolbars, etc. with any of these three, I just went to their websites, and added them to 1st: by  my PC's Start list, and next to my Desktop. Two of them have very few adds, The Weather Channel, and AccuWeather, but WeatherBug has some but they are not in the way of using it and quickly go away when you choose it's "apps" or "settings". You can easily set-up all three to give the REAL TIME weather for your home town, and all three work great.

Please let me know if this helps you as, " everybody talks about the weather, but nobody ever does anything about it" - LOL ! Sincerely yours ma'am, James Colvin

PS- We are both just leaving MS's weather gadget on our Desktops in the event that MS fixes the problem, as I have had the same issue before (about a year or so ago) and MS fixed it and it began working again until January of 2015.
