I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - bit and my weather gadget is not working, it is displaying a message "Cannot connect to service .

I have also tried by turning off firewall and antivirus but it still don't works for me .

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

If this is true, then why has the weather gadget been working for all my customers, and all the refurbished computers I have sold, and my own computers at work and at home, for two and a half years since your comment?

Only today has this issue showed up on my computer. If I cannot fix it I will start uninstalling recent Microsoft updates, and I will also complain to the Canadian government about Microsoft disabling functions in my computer without my permission.

If what you say is true, I don't know where Microsoft gets off crippling functions on MY OWN PERSONAL PC without my permission.

I would have to assume this falls under some hacking laws. If I can't fix this issue, I will proceed with complaints.

I did the "permanent" fix a few months ago by changing the date to 2017 and changing the config.xml to read only but it appears the weather gadget is now not working properly. It doesn't seem to update on its own. I have to manually do it by expanding the gadget to large size and then making it smaller again. That usually works but I am guessing something in a recent Windows Update is now adversely effecting the gadget even with the "permanent" fix.

Hello Mitch,

first of all, I don't see any possibility to change properties of Temporary Internet Files content, and then I don't see a reason to prefer doing this over modifying config.xml, even if possible. It should show no other result prolonging the validity of configW7.xml than the one of config.xml. If you'd like to have a solution involving configW7.xml, once yours has expired (disappeared), set up a server on your own machine, place a configW7.xml in the root directory, and redirect gadgets.live.com to 127.0.0.1 via your hosts file. This way gadgets.live.com/configW7.xml will be brought back to the IE cache.

I was afraid you might say that! LoL If the Cache modified file will do the same, then I guess that will be enough!! Its still good to know my idea won't work, or can't easily be made to work, I think! LoL

You didn't have any comments about my MS Complaints??:) I guess you are affilidated with MS, or you're also afraid they made delete your Posts?? LoL Does anyone from Official MS monitor or ever comment on issues being discussed here, as I've seen none that I could identify?? I think it would help them if they did! LoL
