I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 - bit and my weather gadget is not working, it is displaying a message "Cannot connect to service .

I have also tried by turning off firewall and antivirus but it still don't works for me .

Update:

Microsoft has DISABLED the weather and currency gadgets via a recent Security Update, due to concerns over the vulnerability associated with these gadgets running on your computer. You can read more about it here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2719662 . Adjusting your computer's settings and all these other "suggestions" people are making, will NOT work. The function has been REMOVED from the operating system. It has also been removed from the Windows 8 operating system. There are "theorists" that either agree that there is a security issue within the gadgets or Microsoft just does not want to support gadgets (usually third party software) and thus, has disabled them in Windows 7 and eliminated them in Windows 8.

Thanks to DaveNYC for the Info. Spread the word because many people are facing this problem just like you.

To all having this problem, the following worked for me:

After eading all kind of solutions, I changed the config.xml file according instructions and then I got connected but only to my own location (in my case Amsterdam). Tried everything else, no results, till I only give the exact zip code for the place I like to see the weather in the search menu and guess it worked, then I did the same on my computer in Greece (via teamviewer) and there it worked as well.

I hope it will help you as good as it did for me.

    change the Date on your computer to be Year 2017.

    Then go to

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache again, look at now Newly created config.xml to see it now has 2017 as Year, and then Rightclick the file, chose Properties, set READ-ONLY Attribute on the file.

    Click OK.

    Set the Computers Date back to 2015 again.

    Rightclick the Desktop, chose Gadgets, chose Weather Gadget, you're done.

    edit:  I tried this again and it did get the weather gadget working.  Hoping now I won't have to mess with it for two years.

    I spent two hours with windows support-one on an issue that they didn’t even know about. They escalated to second tear support called me back the following day just to tell the blatant obvious that the weather gadget had been discontinued because of security problems. Case closed! REALLY? That’s it? No fixes no replacement weather gadget or widget? A software company such as Microsoft can’t even get a simple weather desktop gadget right? That is just stupid sad. I’m wasting hard earn money on Microsoft and PCs. After twenty six years I am about to do something I thought I would never do and go to Apple. I mean Microsoft does not care to listen and will never emit to anything. The Office for dummies RIBBONS are a travesty. They would sell untold copies of office if they would do one simple thing and give us the option to a classic interface. THEY DO NOT LISTEN, THEY DO NOT CARE!

    I tried that and it didn't work.  By the way, since I have it on another computer (Win7 also) which has the gadgets that work, I copied (overwrote) all of the associated files onto my other computer on which the gadgets didn't work.  After I did that, the weather gadgets worked for a couple of weeks. hen suddenly, they stopped again.

    The ONLY thing you should do is to change the DATE on the config.xml file, and then set the READ-ONLY Attribute.

    You're saying you did so, but HOW did you manage to do so, since you also say you're no good at things like this ?!  HOW did you manage to change to the Date on the config.xml file?

    Look at the config.xml; Rightclick the file, chose Properties, is the date set at year 2017, and the Attribute READ-ONLY checked?

    You should not have copied the file(s?) from another computer, since there's no guarantee the setup for the other computer is the same.

    Instead to TRY to fix this mess, Close the Weather Gadget, reboot the computer, go to

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache

    Delete the config.xml file in there.

    Now change the Date on your computer to be Year 2017.

    Then Rightclick the Desktop, chose Gadgets, chose Weather Gadget; it should start, so then close it again.

    Then go to

    C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Services\Cache again, look at now Newly created config.xml to see it now has 2017 as Year, and then Rightclick the file, chose Properties, set READ-ONLY Attribute on the file.

    Click OK.

    Set the Computers Date back to 2015 again.

    Rightclick the Desktop, chose Gadgets, chose Weather Gadget, you're done.

    To contact MS about this is probably just a waste of money since they have abandoned the Weather Gadget.
