Hi Ian,

Welcome to the Microsoft Community forums where you can find answers to all your Windows related queries.

We can’t import contacts directly to the People app from a CSV file. However, if you visit http://people.live.com/ you can import the contacts through manage option. You can refer these steps:

a) Visit http://people.live.com/ and login with the same Microsoft ID that you have synced with the People app

b) Click on “Manage” on the top and click on “Add people”

c) Click on “import from a file”

d) Browse and import the CSV file from your computer

Note: It might take some time for the contacts to be updated in the People app in your computer.

Hope this helps. If you have any other queries related to Windows, please get back to us and we’d be happy to help.

After you login to http://people.live.com, and Click on “Add people” following "Manage, There is no "import" or Add People" indicator. I have Outlook2013.

These instructions were wrong (for my PC and Outlook 2013) and did not work.

I'm so disappointed with Win8 as it's very confusing even for apparently simple tasks (such as importing a CSV file with contacts). I can't express how upset I am...

Not only importing contacts is annoying but it feels like you have to search MS KB/forum for every other thing you try to do. I would have expected it to be more user-friendly and easier to use than previous versions, but that is not the case.

Here I go how it worked for me:

I have a Verizon Wireless Account and a Windows 8 Nokia Lumia Icon Phone.

    Steps:

    1. Log into my Verizon Account
    2. go to and click "Manage my device" drop down menu to the left of the screen or site
    3. and click on "Manage contacts"
    4. When you are in Manage my contacts check off "all contacts" box
    5. in the middle next to where it says how many contacts you have; there is a settings option gear
    6. Click the settings option gear
    7. drop down menu open and click on "export contact"
    8. choose "Save a copy of my Backup Assistant Plus/ Cloud contacts to this computer"
    9. click on "EXPORT" wait some seconds and you will get a windows option in the bottom of the screen

    "OPEN" "SAVE" or "CANCEL"

    1. click on save and or save as (you can select the location in you computer or automatically will go to the "downloads" folder.
    2. Now go to http://people.live.com/  using an Microsoft email account (live, Hotmail, or outlook) to log in.
    3. look and click for "import contacts" option "start import" and retrieve the CVS file the one you downloaded to your computer from Verizon website named "Mycontacts.cvs"
    4. you NOW see all your contacts in PEOPLE.

14 Now go to you phone and click VERIZON WIRELESS Tile. Inside click the icon for contacts (which is people) and browse to WHAT's NEW and click on SET UP AN ACCOUNT

    1. ENTER your Microsoft Email Credentials as you did for people.live.com and after that automatically your phone will start syncing and retrieving all your contacts. That's it problem SOLVED! Thanks!
