Hi getting above message with device manager for this hardware TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H653N ATA

Ive tried running the Microsoft trouble shooter but this doesn't help any ideas? Running Windows 8 thanks

Can you check the following registry key?:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

At that registry key, in the right window, is there, under "Name", either an UpperFilters or LowerFilters value?

If so, for each of the UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value, what is listed under "Data"?

    Hi Howard,

    What computer do you have (make/model)?

    Also, when did this problem start and did the start of the problem coincide with any hardware or software change?

    I'm on a SP3 and Fujitsu T901 - Both 64bit and both Win 8.1 - Same problem on both devices.  I downloaded and installed the driver package from GearSoftware.com and as atg least one other reported, it fixed the problem.   Now the only problem is that the SP3 does not supply enough power from the USB port to power the portable drive.

    So, deleting that UpperFilter value definitely brought my drive back to life. It was completely fine last week, until I ran a windows update. If you have the time, could you explain exactly what happens here? What are these UpperFilters doing exactly and why did deleting its value make the drive pop into existence? Thanks for all the help!

    Hi Charles.

    What was the UpperFilters value you deleted (What was under Value data that was removed)?

    That may make it easier to explain what may have happened in your case.

    The UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value(s) load filter drivers for a device.

    These filter drivers add functionality to software, such as CD/DVD burning software.

    If an UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value exists and there is no corresponding filter driver or a corrupted filter driver exists on the system then the error would occur.   

    This may happen when a software gets uninstalled leaving the UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value(s) behind but removes the corresponding driver(s).
