Maybe you should try using a duplicate file finder to check the folders in the mail store?

I've seen the suggestion to remove duplicate emails one by one. However, if you delete a duplicate, the original email will be deleted from the mail server. You would have to set the email to NOT delete the server email when the email is deleted.
My problem is ATT.net changed their setup requirements by changing the Pop and SMPT entries to simply Inbound.att.net and outbound.att.net. When this occurs, it will re-download all the emails that you have downloaded before. On one of our important computers, the emails went from like 6,000 to 28,000 emails. It will take almost forever to delete these duplicate/triplicates!

I am having the exact same issue with a client's @bellsouth.net address. Had to change those settings and it duplicated all 22,000 emails to increase total box to 40k... The client wants to keep Windows Mail (on Vista) as opposed to changing the email client (my suggestion: Thunderbird with duplicate removal addon).
I CANNOT find a completely FREE software to remove the duplicates so I may end up purchasing "Dupe Remover for Windows Mail & Outlook Express. Here is the link if anyone's interested, http://www.topalt.com/duplicate-remover-outlook-express-windows-mail.
I reconfigured and now have exactly the same problem. Every time I check mail, it is as if I'm starting from scratch, so I now have over 50,000 messages! Hope someone can help unduplicate these messages.
Thanks.
That's how I got in trouble the first time: changed the accounts as recommended and went from small number to over 30,000. However, I believe a fix for my email timing out may be a logical fix for this problem. Go to your email provider and log in. Make a new folder called Temp or something. Move all of your regular emails in the inbox to Temp. You may have to do this screen by screen as my provider att.net would only let me move 50 at a time.
Go back into your email and delete all of your emails - original and duplicates. This will delete everything but since there is nothing in your provider's inbox, nothing will be deleted there. Close your email. Go back to your provider and move the emails from Temp back to the inbox.
Go back to your email and download your emails. Your inbox is empty and only the emails from your provider inbox will download. The only problem is that any emails in your other folders will be downloaded again into your inbox. I don't know but someone may have an answer. If you delete the duplicate emails from your inbox that you have in folders will the emails in folders disappear. I don't think so but I'm no expert on Live Mail.
CAUTION: Some one who has a small email account should try this out first to verify that it works. I know how files and folders work and in gmail, folders are only labels and when you move or delete an email, just the label changes and the email shows up in the appropriate folder.
