I had this problem and think I have found the cure. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (probably bottom right tasks bar) left hand side of control panel click on Phys configurations, click on automatic and change to GForce (if this is what your computer runs) click apply - hopefully this may cure your problems. TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recoverycomponent in Windows. **** What happens is the Graphics Display driver for the installed graphics card stops responding. When this happens, windows will stop and restart the driver to fix the problem.
The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.
This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.
Some things you can do to avoid these problems:
a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.
I would suggest you to download and Install the latest graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
You can install Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 8 compatible drivers.
Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the drivers and install.

I have several crashes with the video tdr failure and i trued to solve it by downloading new drivers and it crahed while dowloading. Is this a hardware problem?
It can be a hardware problem but not always. Test your hardware. Also, if you have a discrete video graphics card, pull it and reseat it before doing anything else and see if that solves the problem. Sometimes dust gets between the connections or it loosens over time from heating, cooling, and reheating, and doesn't make proper contact on all connections once the system reaches a certain temperature. Speaking of dust, make sure your video graphics card isn't covered in dust or have dust embedded in the heat sink and heat sink fan(s) and vent holes in the case chassis. If that doesn't solve the problem, and testing shows the hardware is OK, it possibly could be corrupted drivers. In that case, completely uninstall the drivers and reinstall them.
I have a laptop and it is less than a year old with not a crazy amount of use so i dont think dust would be too much of a problem. What is the best way to test the hardware. And if its ok then is it the graphics card drivers i have to update?
