I had this problem and think I have found the cure. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (probably bottom right tasks bar) left hand side of control panel click on Phys configurations, click on automatic and change to GForce (if this is what your computer runs) click apply - hopefully this may cure your problems. 1. When do you get this error message?
2. Were there any recent changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recoverycomponent in Windows. **** What happens is the Graphics Display driver for the installed graphics card stops responding. When this happens, windows will stop and restart the driver to fix the problem.
The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.
This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.
Some things you can do to avoid these problems:
a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.
I would suggest you to download and Install the latest graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
You can install Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 8 compatible drivers.
Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the drivers and install.

I see this is an older post but I am having thisissue on an older Toshiba Satellite Machine. It takes 3 tries of booting and rebooting before the TDR message goes away. I am running windows 10 and had the issue for about 6 months after a windows update. After that time there was another Windows update and the issue fixed itself. This lasted about 3 weeks, now after another recent update it has begun doing the same thing again. I have updated the drivers on my Pc and it is still doing the same thing hoping a new update will come out soon to fix this issue really frustrating while trying to work and publish on my blog steroidreviewer.com in the meantime I will continue to search for a fix.
Try rolling back to the previous, working graphics card driver after updates. Use Device Manager to do that. If you cannot roll back, download the driver previous to the one causing the issue. See if that helps for now.
The suggested solution did not work. What next?
AMD? NVidia? Intel? Other? If AMD, check the version number. If dated to 10/26/2017 (or close enough to this date for government work), roll back to the previous, working driver using Device Manager. Version 23.20.780.2 is very, very buggy, and if you are using that one for AMD you are very lucky it isn't worse than the video_TDR_failure error. I almost had two of my monitors burned out when that driver went on the fritz right after installation! If I hadn't had a DisplayLink device running at the same time I might not have been as lucky, either.
