I had this problem and think I have found the cure. Open up the Nvidia Control Panel (probably bottom right tasks bar) left hand side of control panel click on Phys configurations, click on automatic and change to GForce (if this is what your computer runs) click apply - hopefully this may cure your problems. TDR is the Timeout, Detection, and Recoverycomponent in Windows. **** What happens is the Graphics Display driver for the installed graphics card stops responding. When this happens, windows will stop and restart the driver to fix the problem.
The most common reason for this issue is that the graphics device is being overloaded or used beyond its capabilities.
This happens most often when playing graphic intensive games, but can happen with any process that uses a large amount of graphic resources, such as when editing or creating videos.
Some things you can do to avoid these problems:
a. Make sure you are using the latest graphics device driver.
b. Manage your time working with programs that are graphic intensive, exit any other programs that might also use a large amount of resources.
I would suggest you to download and Install the latest graphic card drivers from the manufacturer’s website and check.
You can install Windows 7 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 8 compatible drivers.
Follow these steps:
a) Press the ‘Windows + W’ key on the keyboard.
b) Type compatibility in the search box and then press enter.
c) Click “Run programs made for previous versions of Windows” option from the list appeared in the left side.
d) Select the drivers and install.

Dell systems have a system partition and a utility partition that contain diagnostic utilities that they put there at the factory. If you did not delete those partitions they are still there. You run them from the partition or from the DVD that came with your Dell system. If you did not get such things with your system (you should have; every Dell I have ever bought has had them in the box and/or on the hard drive), you should contact Dell to get them.
Clean install should work, too, so long as it isn't a hardware issue.

Any vents or fans blocked with animal hair and dust also will cause video hardware to generate errors once certain thermal conditions are reached. It also depends on the environment, and usage.
But testing can be done with the utilities that typically are installed in a system partition by the factory. Or, they are on a CD that came with your computer, or both. You have not stated the brand of your laptop so it isn't really possible to be specific.

If there is any element that is corrupt, parts will be patched by newer elements of the driver but anything still older that is part of the newer package will remain corrupted. In such a case, it is best to download the newest driver (but don't install it until you have remove all elements of the previous driver), and then fully uninstall and remove all installed driver components.
That said, sometimes it just is a setting that got changed that results in the error you are seeing. If the setting allows for activity that overtaxes the components in the graphics hardware, you also can get this error. Also, setting the laptop on a surface that allows vents to be blocked or to have airflow restricted, also will cause thermal conditions that could lead to this same error.
I have a dell xps 15 9550. I just powered it on. The laptop and i had a lot of the screen turing off for a second and then turning back on but is aorted itself out. I am running the latest driver right now but I am going to do a clean install. Also when this happens cortana is left blank for a minute.
