The file ntoskrnl.exe is dated March 7 and has the following version information:

c:/windows/system32/ntoskrnl.exe:

File Version:  6.2.9200.16551

Product Version: 6.2.9200.16551

File Flags:

File OS:  NT_WINDOWS32

File Type:  APP

Language: English (United States), Code Page: Unicode

 CompanyName: Microsoft Corporation

 FileDescription: NT Kernel & System

 FileVersion: 6.2.9200.16551 (win8_gdr.130306-1502)

 OriginalFilename: ntkrpamp.exe

 ProductName: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System

I have a full memory dump available.

How should I troubleshoot this (other than the tedious msconfig / disable stuff / enable stuff /... process)?

    Install went fine (requiring a reboot).

    This gets me:

    $ ls -ld c:/windows/system32/drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys

    -rwxrwxrwa   1 Administrateurs AUTORITE+NT\Système  659328 Aug 17  2009 c:/Windows/System32/Drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys

    $ filever -v c:/windows/system32/drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys

    c:/windows/system32/drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys:

    File Version:           8.5.0.251

    Product Version:        8.5.0.251

    File Flags:             PRIVATEBUILD

    File OS:                NT_WINDOWS32

    File Type:              DRV

    File Subtype:           SYSTEM

    Language: Language Neutral, Code Page: Unicode

            CompanyName: AuthenTec, Inc.

            FileDescription:  AuthenTec Swipe Sensor WDF USB Driver

            FileVersion: 8.5.0.251

            InternalName: ATSwpWDF.sys

            LegalCopyright: Copyright 2006-2009 AuthenTec, Inc.

            OriginalFilename: ATSwpWDF.sys

            ProductName:  Swipe Fingerprint Sensor WDF USB Driver

            ProductVersion: 8.5.0.251

    (but not fingerprint-based sign-on/unlock)

    P.S. that's still older than the original driver which bore a 2012 copyright.

    That does appear to be older driver but may work better on your system.

    Post back if BSODs persist.

    I had to use a USB thumb drive, inserting it would not trigger detection, so I initiated a restart.

    One more BSOD...

    The error still references the ATSwpWDF.sys so try the following driver (32-bit) which has "Enhanced power management":

    This seems to be one I already tried earlier, where the installer would fail. Running it a second time succeeded (???).

    Now I have:

    $ ls -ld c:/windows/system32/drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys

    -rwxrwxrwa   1 Administrateurs AUTORITE+NT\Système  542880 Dec 23  2011 c:/Windows/System32/Drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys

    $ filever -v c:/windows/system32/drivers/ATSwpWDF.sys
