Can't output sound to bluetooth speaker (JBL flip)

Hi there,

I have a JBL flip portable bluetooth speaker which works fine with my smartphone etc.  My laptop (Samsung, windows 7) connects with it and identifies it as a bluetooth headset, however I can't play any music through it at all.  The laptop doesn't recognize it as a "playback device" or a piece of hardware in the "sound" section of the control panel and I can't seem to get it to work at all.

Any ideas anyone?

Many thanks

Mike

Hi Michael,

The issue could be caused in the Volume Settings, sound card or driver.

. Did you check the issue with different laptop?

Follow the methods below:

Method 1:

Try using the Playing Audio troubleshooter to fix the problem. It checks for common problems with your volume settings, your sound card or driver, and your speakers or headphones.

Tips for fixing common sound problems:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Tips-for-fixing-common-sound-problems

Method 2:

Try installing the drivers and check the status.

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isnt-working-properly

Method 3:

After you've paired (connected) a Bluetooth enabled device with a Bluetooth enabled computer, you can change the name of the device or enable or disable services for it. You can also control how your computer pairs with this and with other Bluetooth enabled devices.

Change settings for a Bluetooth enabled device:

Harman JBL is not supported by Windows.  You can buy the drivers from various online distributers.  Harman JBL do not provide drivers for connecting to Intel Bluetooth generally used in laptops using Windows, if you read the product information online Harman JBL do not claim that it will work on a laptop only an MTP or tablet.  Not a satisfying answer I know

This was very helpful; the key piece of it for me was (disabling the default player and then):

Checking the Devices and Printers' Services Tab for the device and making sure everything was checked, in my case; the headset/headphones checkbox wasn't checked, checking it tied the system tray speaker icon to the JBL Flip and so then unmuting that (I think it was muted by default when I disabled the default audio divice) fixed this.  After this, ocassionally the speaker kicks out but pushing its bluetooth button seems to resolve the connection.   So I think the PC's recognizing the device as a headphones rather than as as free-standing speaker.

Thanks for your post.  Very helpful.

You must update the Bluetooth drivers on your laptop for the flip to work. Older drivers can't communicate properly with the JBL Flip Bluetooth radio transceiver. Go to the mftr website and get the latest for your computer. (You could also search the internet for updated drivers using the Hardware ID in device manager. In my case, there were 2 devices listed under Bluetooth radios. The one I updated was NOT the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator.)

Originally, my Lenovo laptop was finding the JBL Flip and would install as a wireless bluetooth headset only, but would not connect, nor show as a playback device. Flashing blue light on the Flip showed it wasn't pairing even though Windows 7 was installing it.

I finally found and installed updated Bluetooth drivers from the Lenovo website. Upon reboot, JBL Flip was found, connected and paired, and installed as a Bluetooth headset and an audio playback device under control panel>sounds. When connected, a pop-up appears with connection and device details\options.

Old drivers were Bluetooth dated 2011. New drivers are dated May 2013.
