USB-IF xHCI USB host controller driver problem

My new Windows 8 in Sony VAIO has detected problem with the driver for USB-IF xHCI USB host controller, which Windows couldn't reinstall. What to do? I haven't made the recovery disks yet! Please reply...

The link basically says to visit the Intel website and use the Intel Driver Update Utility. The utility will automatically scan your computer for devices that are eligible for an update. Hope this helps you because it helped me. I also updated my Wireless driver while I was using the Intel Driver Update Utility since a newer driver was recently made available.

This worked for me; however, I ended up having to uninstall the old Intel WiDi driver and then restarting my computer before the setup.exe file would run and install on my computer (dell inspiron). I did create a restore point in case it didn't work, but everything seems to be running smoothly!

I should also point out that just deleting the Intel WiDi driver also got rid of the yellow exclamation mark, and unless you are planning to try and connect to your computer to your TV wirelessly, I don't think it is something that you need. Here is a link that explains what the driver does:

    Hi Mark.

    This was a perplexing problem for me for an indefinite period of time. As others have indicated, it occurred after the OS upgraded from the default Windows 8 to 8.1. Microsoft Update did not correct this issue so I followed the same procedure (you outlined in the currently posted response) and unhappily, this did not resolve the issue ALTHOUGH the system allowed the update (reporting it had installed successfully?). However, I made several system setting changes (which I performed blindly) regarding allowing location settings and after several startups the problem seems to have corrected itself. Sorry, it was a mystery to me all along so this post may not be of any help to anyone. Nevertheless, I am posting it to "demystify" others.

    I am unable to do this...  I get error message, "invalid characters."  Any suggestions?

    I tried updating the driver.  Said it was successfully updated and running the most current version.  Still not working.

    I also went to the intel web site recommended by another user (Intel) and did a search for the driver to reinstall it, but it said the driver was not found?

    Thanks....  Pulling my hair out right now.

    Thank you everyone for sharing your "bad" experiences with the similar problem as mine. I just wanted to update that I had online chatting with Sony and they remotely connected to my VAIO and resolved the issue. I could see them working on my PC and they didn't change the date of my PC but un-install it. Then check from hardware changes and it didn't show any yellow exclamation mark but removed the Intel WiUSB device. However, my lappy is working fine so far and also all the USB drives as well as in-built camera (my device manage shows USB 2.0 camera in it)

    Outstanding. Thank you so much. I can see that I am late to the party but mine (Dell XPS One 2710 Win 8.1) just went south all of a sudden today at a bad time. First my printer and then most or all of my USB devices went off-line. However, just uninstalling the driver (I chose to leave the files) worked without a restart even. A touch screen or the original system keyboard and mouse were necessary as mine Logitechs were all off line. I did go on and restart and check again as advised above and all if now well. Thank you again for sharing this advice. It seems to work for Sony and Dell. I think it is the definitive answer.
