.Net Framework 3.5 fails to install with error code 0x800F081F

Original Title: Error installing .net framework 3.5 sp1

I did a refresh of my install of windows 8 pro (64 bit), because Weather and several other apps were failing (they started, then the main window closed, but the small window stayed in the task list to the left; event viewer gave access permissions errors).

This seemed to sort most of the apps BUT now I cannot re-install many programs as they need .net framework 3.5 and this fails to install with error 0x800F081F. I even tried downloading the full installer and running locally but it still gives the same error!

I need the framework to work with OpenXML development, a large part of my work.

(I should also point out the refresh says most apps are retained - it fails to mention all applications are removed!)

Thank you for your reply, but I already reinstalled windows since I needed my laptop as soon as possible. This meant I had to install vista first, then 8, then 8.1 again. I just wasn't able to enable the .net associated boxes until I did and, therefore couldn't now check to see if those particular updates were involved. Thanks again !

Are Windows security updates KB2966826 and KB2966828 installed? It looks like they are incompatible with .NET Framework Installation. If they are installed.. simply uninstall them and try again to install .NET Framework 3.5 through the regular feature installation.

I've had the same error and wasn't able to install even with the offline installer. After uninstallation of both Updates everything works fine for me.

I really feel for you, as I am having the same damn thing. At first, because I couldn't download my Zune software because of the 3.5 issue, I decided to link my device with my older vista pc tower hooked to my entertainment center as a workaround. But when I couldn't install my blackberry desktop software...etc etc etc. I now know there is no other way but to load my original op system vista and do the 8 and 8.1 again now three days later also. Everyone just remember to make sure you have .net framework 3.5 installed first and all the updates with your original operating system before you install 8, then 8.1. Very frustrating since I really now don't have the time to research any further since I have to run a business and have a life too.
