Since resolving an issue with my ATI Video Driver recently, I have started getting the following errors, once a day, which cause my system to restart unexpectedly.

I believe this to be a driver issue, even though it looks like a hardware issue.

When it happens, I am usually watching TV on it via my XBOX Media Center Extender.

Event ID 20 - WHEA-Logger

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge

Error Source: Machine Check Exception

Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error

Processor APIC ID: 0

My Computer is a Dell XPS 7100 with an AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor and ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics adaptor.

All Dell diagnostics run cleanly and successfully.

Can anyone advise what to do to investigate further please?

    I would suggest that this AMD engineer is confusing fast start up in BIOS with the fast start up disabled on what the power button does in Power Settings.

    Thomas, hi,

    This is a good start on an investigation, thank you. Where to now?

    Here's what I mean.  I've got two Windows 10 machines -- one Intel (which has never had this problem), one AMD (which stopped having this problem completely once I turned off Fast Boot).  When I saw your post, I checked System Information on the Intel machine.

    Both machines show a lot of conflicts. 

    The real question is, so what? Which of these conflicts matters? Why does it matter? And what can any of us plain vanilla non-operating-systems-reprogrammers do to resolve it?

    Since this error is clearly not user related and based on an interaction between windows and the northbridge I sent a support ticket to  AMD and I encourage you guys to do the same, especially if your cpu is still under warranty.

    Also post or upvote the issue in the windows feedback app to let microsoft know.

    Yeah, that's a good idea.  I'll log a ticket with AMD when I get home today.

    My BIOS was already updated to its latest version before my last sudden reboot, so that didn't do anything for me. So far, disabling fastboot seems to be good.

    I second that, my bios is up to date and I tried everything in the book to fix that error. (and as I have seen in this thread other repair technicians have failed to locate a user specific issue)

    I appreciate notonyourtintype attempt at an answer though it was lengthy only to come with "amd cpus have a specific instruction that grinds windows gears since november".

    Since this error is clearly not user related and based on an interaction between windows and the northbridge I sent a support ticket to  AMD and I encourage you guys to do the same, especially if your cpu is still under warranty.

    do this all here ok by holding down your windows key and hit the X key in windows 10 and then click on device manager then click the right arrow for system devices and then right click all AMD to update them and let windows update them for you but also you can go through all to make sure all drivers are up to date too !!!  Hope this helps b/c I had to do it for two AMD in system devices now.  Hope this helped me out as much as you here.
