Since resolving an issue with my ATI Video Driver recently, I have started getting the following errors, once a day, which cause my system to restart unexpectedly.

I believe this to be a driver issue, even though it looks like a hardware issue.

When it happens, I am usually watching TV on it via my XBOX Media Center Extender.

Event ID 20 - WHEA-Logger

A fatal hardware error has occurred.

Component: AMD Northbridge

Error Source: Machine Check Exception

Error Type: HyperTransport Watchdog Timeout Error

Processor APIC ID: 0

The details view of this entry contains further information.

My Computer is a Dell XPS 7100 with an AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor and ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series graphics adaptor.

All Dell diagnostics run cleanly and successfully.

Can anyone advise what to do to investigate further please?

An update in early January 2018 resulted in issues with onboard Graphics chips. In particular AMD HD 3000 chipsets. Updating to version 1709 would then prevent you rolling back the Graphics Driver so you would have had to have rolled back the driver before updating from Windows 10 version 1703 to 1709. The rogue update would then automatically install resulting in the resolution changing, large icons and windows not filling the screen etc.

I was unable to find a quick fix at the time and although Microsoft acknowledged the fault they were unable to give a resolution timescale, blaming AMD and vice versa.

I installed Graphics Cards into all computers which resolved this issue. Please note, the Windows update still tries to upgrade these cards but you can install the latest driver from AMD and then block any driver updates from Windows without permission.

Please note that this issue is completely separate from the Northbridge Error issue resulting in computer restarts or freezing.

I have an external GPU. I rolled back to the last stable version of the driver (18.2.1) with a clean installation.

The issue came back after a minor Windows update, but also after a graphics driver update (optional, 18.2.3). Of course I'm not sure it's because of that. We'll see.

I have both a discrete and integrated GPU, I'm currently in the process of troubleshooting that issue with the AMD support, they proposed that the error might come from windows pushing an update on the integrated gpu, so we deactivated the chip and deactivated the automatic GPU driver update.(requires a specific piece of software)

I will update you guys with the full procedure if it solves the problem.

Is anyone having this issue with an external GPU or is everyone having the issue with integrated graphics?

That's possible! I also updated the graphics driver recently, but these re-boots were not related to graphics driver before.

Yes, the no-fast-boot setting is the same for all users, I don't even think this is a user-specific setting.
