Error Code: 0xc0000034 in Windows 8 - Boot Configuration Data file missing required information

I have Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook and recently received this error message after having no previous problems with the laptop. Dell tech support ran me through hard drive tests and no problems were found. I was told the only way to fix this issue is to reinstall the Operating System, which will cause me to lose all my files and applications I have installed.

Is there any other way to fix this problem so that I will not lose everything? And how do I prevent this issue from happening again?

As per the issue, you get an error message “boot configuration data file is missing some required information” along with the error code “0xc0000034” when you boot to the computer.

I would like to gather some information on this issue to get a clear picture:

Did you make any hardware or software changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Perhaps, Windows boot files might be missing which are important to boot into the computer.

Let’s try Automatic Repair for Windows 8 on the computer and check if it can resolve the issue.

You may follow the methods:

Method 1: Booting to Recovery Environment with Windows 8 installation media.

Please follow the steps given below. Insert the Windows 8 installation DVD in the DVD ROM and restart your computer.

a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.

e) Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

f) Click Automatic Repair from Advanced Options screen.

g) Next, choose the operating system by clicking on its button.

h) Windows 8 will look for problems on hard drive(s) and verify that all required files are intact.

Method 2: If automatic repair doesn’t help to repair the startup files, you may try to repair them using these commands through Command Prompt under Advance Options.

Refer to the steps:

a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVDor System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.

e) Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

f) Click on command Prompt.

g) Type these following commands and hit enter after each line of command:

Bootrec /fixmbr

Bootrec /fixboot

Bootrec /scanos

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Hi,

Thank you for the update on the issue.

If you could not run the command successfully and while running the system repair you are getting the same error. In that scenario I would suggest you contact the manufacturer of your computer (HP). As it seems that there might be a chance that some issue is either with the hardware or need some changes to be done in BIOS. So **HP support**will be the best option for you as they know better than us if it comes to hardware or BIOS.

Important: Modifying BIOS/ complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Modifications of the settings are at your own risk.

Hi,

thank you alot for your reply.

I select "Repair your Computer" then I get to the screen "System Recovery Options" and an option "Command Prompt" which I select. I then can enter "chkdsk c: /f" and it runs, however after it runs I get an error "failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50". I have also tried using the command "chkdsk c: /r" and I got the same error.

I start the installation with usb and I receive again the error "Windows could not update the computer's boot configuration".

What can I do?

Thank you for the update on the issue, I would request you to run chkdsk command to scan your hard disk if there is any corruption with disk or not. To check if your hard drive is causing the issue we can try running chkdsk command.

Steps to run CHKDSK command.
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Command prompt (Admin) from the list.
- Press **** OK the UAC prompt if shown. That will open an elevated command prompt. (It will show Administrator in the caption.)
- Then enter the chkdsk command
chkdsk c: /f (or other drive letter if applicable).
- Confirm to run on next startup and reboot.
Computer can’t run a disk check while actively using Windows, but you can schedule it to start automatically the next time your computer is turned on.

When the disk check is finished, your computer will automatically reboot. The disk check will fix any problems it encounters in your hard drive.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost
