Error Code: 0xc0000034 in Windows 8 - Boot Configuration Data file missing required information

I have Dell Inspiron 14z Ultrabook and recently received this error message after having no previous problems with the laptop.  Dell tech support ran me through hard drive tests and no problems were found.  I was told the only way to fix this issue is to reinstall the Operating System, which will cause me to lose all my files and applications I have installed.

Is there any other way to fix this problem so that I will not lose everything?  And how do I prevent this issue from happening again?

Did you make any hardware or software changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Perhaps, Windows boot files might be missing which are important to boot into the computer.

Let’s try Automatic Repair for Windows 8 on the computer and check if it can resolve the issue.

You may follow the methods:

Method 1: Booting to Recovery Environment with Windows 8 installation media.

Please follow the steps given below. Insert the Windows 8 installation DVD in the DVD ROM and restart your computer.

a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVD or System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

d) Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.

e) Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.

f) Click Automatic Repair from Advanced Options screen.

g) Next, choose the operating system by clicking on its button.

h) Windows 8 will look for problems on hard drive(s) and verify that all required files are intact.

Method 2: If automatic repair doesn’t help to repair the startup files, you may try to repair them using these commands through Command Prompt under Advance Options.

Refer to the steps:

a) After you boot your computer using Windows 8 DVDor System Repair Disc, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD". Press any key.

b) Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

c) Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.

Bootrec /fixmbr

Bootrec /fixboot

Bootrec /scanos

Bootrec /rebuildbcd

    Venue 8 does not boot into usb or any usb dvd  I have and I have no idea how to setup the boot menu to boot into external devices on its stupid new bios.

    I had the same error code and tried everything in these forums with no success.  I was to the point of wiping my hard drive.  I was about to give up when I found a company called Neosmart that makes a program called Easy Recovery Essentials.  It was a pain to download because it had to be burned to a cd as a bootable program, which took downloading a free burning program.  Since my computer would not start, I had to use my company computer to burn the disk.  Before I put the cd in my computer, I had to change the order  in which my hardware booted, so the cd drive would boot first.  The Neosmart website walks you through this.  My first try was a failure  I played with the boot options by hitting f12(probably specific to Dell).  I had four options:  UEFI Secure, UEFI Unsecure, Legacy Secure, and Legacy Unsecure.  Legacy Unsecure worked and the program loaded.  This program seems to be able to do a lot of different things, but I chose diagnose and fix problems.  Worked like a charm.  Had to change my start up settings back and all is good.  By the way, the program cost $19.95 and they would not return emails when I had the first problem.  Still, my computer is fixed.  Microsoft will probably delete this post because it might look like advertising.  Figured I would try because I was pulling my hair out reading these forums, searching the net, and talking to Dell technicians that had no answers.

    just contacted Microsoft support to only be told that because i own a MAC and i am using bootcamp that they will not support nor help me with the issue and i should contact apple.

    I am amazed reading above from other users with the same problem shows this is not a MAC issue but a windows 8 issue. i am bitterly disappointing.

    I am now going thru re-install to overcome.

    Thanks for nothing Microsoft!
