task manager not starting error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006"

I have been hearing the Fans speed up to medium and High speed when I am doing nothing that would require any heavy duty resources. I tried both control-alt-delete and  right clicking in the taskbar, and it fails to start up. "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application." I click on OK and it pops up again then I click on OK again and it goes away.

I have run AVG and Spybot in safe mode with networking but nothing detected.... and have cleared my page file memory also.

Is it just corrupted or do I have a bug/virus.

That's good. What I meant is that in order for YOU to see the file, you need to be able to see hidden and system files. Windows however will see the file no matter if YOU can see it or not.

In autoruns I beleive you did not click on "options", then "Filter Options"

Make sure all boxes are cleared in "Filter Options".

Tommorrow I would like for you to delete the task manager in HP-infected. And copy the task manager from Dell2 to HP-infected. Just in case the task manager was infected and actually starting up the malware.

See you tommorrow,

-Alex

To make things bigger in your browser, you may press "Ctrl" and "+" together. This will make your browser Zoom In, and make text bigger.

    NOTE:

I will explain everything I said previously after we finish these steps to eliminate confusion.

    Lets start fresh!

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    Part 1

    1. Turn on your other computer that you copied you files to.
    2. Download these files to your desktop :

    PROCEXP LINK> http://download.sysinternals.com/files/ProcessExplorer.zip

    AUTORUNS LINK> http://download.sysinternals.com/files/Autoruns.zip

    CPORTS LINK> http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.zip

    1. The files you downloaded are zip archives. Double click Processexplorer and extract the contents to the desktop using the wizard OR if you have winrar, right click the archive and click extract here.
    2. Now that you extracted procexp from the archive, copy it to your usb thumb drive. You probably can see two procexp files. You need the one with the windows logo.
    3. Repeat steps 3&4 for the autoruns and cports archives so that in the end you have copied 3 files to your usb thumb drive.

    .

    1. Turn on your infected computer.
    2. Plug in the usb thumb drive and copy the 3 files to your desktop.

    Part 2

    1. Double click procexp. If it does not open or you receive an error similar to what you get when you try to open taskmanager, rename procexp to "sunnyday" (or anything you wish).
    2. When procexp opens, click on "View" > click on "Select Columns"
    3. Make sure that the boxes for "Image Path" and "Command Line" are checked.
    4. Click "Ok"
    5. Click "File" > Click "Save as"
    6. Save this text log file to your usb thumb drive.

    Part 3

    1. Double click autoruns. If it does not open or you receive an error similar to what you get when you try to open taskmanager, rename autoruns to "blaze" (or anything you wish).
    2. Click on "Options" > Click on "Filter Options..."
    3. Clear all of the checkboxes.
    4. Click "Ok"
    5. The program will begin scanning. When "Ready" is displayed in the lower left corner.

    Click "File" > Click "Save..."

    1. Save the autoruns log file to the usb thumb drive.

    Part 4

    1. Double click cports. If it does not open or you receive an error similar to what you get when you try to open taskmanager, rename cports to "wind" (or anything you wish).
    2. Press " Ctrl + A " on your keyboard. (the ctrl key and the A key at the same time)

This should select all of the rows in cports.

    OR

Alternatively, Click "Edit" > Click "Select All"

    1. Click on the floppy disk icon on the toolbar just under "File Edit View (etc)"
    2. Save the log file as a text file to the usb thumb drive.

    Part 5

    1. Remove the usb thumb drive from your infected computer.
    2. On your other computer, come back to this post and click this link to my profile.
    3. On my profile, find my email address beside the words "Contact me:"
    4. Using that email, send me an email with the 3 log files that you got from Parts 2-4 attatched.

I will review the log files and create a script for you that you will only need to double click in order to remove any infections. I will post the script here in this forum for you to copy and paste when completed.

If there is anything you find confusing please don't hesitate to ask, I tried to make this guide as clear as possible and spent lots of time on it.

Is it just corrupted or do I have a bug/virus.

As ElderL indicated, you might very well have a malware infection.

There is no "STOP if it is running" language/dialogue,  I HAD To Assume to click the only STOP button, located just below the dialogue. I just clicked that STOP button and it did something. As There is Nothing on the page about "Running"

I expected - when I clicked on start/run to get the little black box that one would write code into, but this was like a Tabbed menu as in right clicking on a file or something, with tabbed menus on top.

    Shell Hardware:

You said IT NEEDS A FILE on the USB stick or CD?? How do I put the file on the USB stick or CD before I insert it?

Please KEEP In Mind that I am a very depressed old man with bad eyes and am close to giving up. Meaning - I need complete sentences with what question you are answering.

Meaning I feel like I am just stabbing at this thing - "Here and THere" and not accomplishing like a well defined check List that would be easy for me to follow. I grow worried if I see different dialogue on the menu than what is on the instruction. Makes me nervous and want to shut down

    Winston,

I am lagging behind I have not been able to do many of your suggestions, it took me most of today to test if task manager would work in Safe Mode - it did Not. And It took 2.5 hours to do all of the scans, I described earlier.

    From Capt

    Alex,

I don't know if you read this or not so here it is again,

"You said "Now with your special usb device. You can monitor all connected drives with diskmgmt.msc

    Run diskmgmt,msc"

I do not know what you mean here, what special usb device are you referring? A thumb drive USB stick? OR

Are you referring to my usb device connector I use to connect a regular hard (no housing) - my quote "(a special adapter to connect other ide or sata hard drives is NOT Being recognized, although it is listed in Device Manager (without any yellow exclamation point), it Does Not show up in "My Computer" file.  Therefore I cannot backup to a hard drive. This adapter has its own power adapter and cord and a special USB cord that plugs directly in to hard drive and then to a USB port.

I think I need step by step easy instructions, as I am an old man and having a very hard time at this.

I am still copying my files, music and photos using a little 8 gb thumb usb drive and copying them to another computer. Maybe I am transfering infected files also ? ? who knows...

So do I do your suggestion first or keep trying to locate infection,
