Hi James,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community Forums.

From your issue description, I understand that you are not getting sound when you connect your desktop to TV using HDMI cables.

1.What is the make and model of the computer?

2• Did you try connecting different HDMI port and check if it works?

3• Which application are you using to stream movies on the computer?

HDMI cables do support audio signals, but not all HDMI-enabled video cards support audio. If your HDTV has an audio input, you might be able to connect a separate audio cable from your computer's sound card directly to the TV. Otherwise, you'll need to connect the audio signal to a different output device, such as external computer speakers or your home stereo system. Follow these methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

****

By default Windows does not route sound over the HDMI output. To change this we need to change the settings in control panel.

Note: This will turn off sound from the speakers or normal audio output on the laptop. To get that back you will have to reverse this process.

a) Press Windows key + X

b) Click on "Control Panel"

c) With the Control Panel in "Control Panel Home" view please click on "Hardware and Sound"

d) Where it says "Sound" in green letters there are three options below that are in blue click on "Manage Audio Devices"

e) This will bring up a window labeled "Sound"

f) On the "Playback" tab there is listed the sound options available to you. One should read "Digital Output Device (HDMI)" Click on that.

g) There should now be a check mark on that option, make HDMI sound output as default .

h) The Sound should then play through your HDMI hookups to the TV.

Method 2 :

Update the Sound driver.

Please follow the steps given here.

a) Press Windows key + X key when you are at desktop.

b) Select Device Manager.

c) Double-click Sound driver from the left panel to Update.

d) Right-click the device, and click Update driver Software

e) Windows will prompt you to confirm the device’s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.

Please reboot your computer

Hope it helps. For any further Windows related assistance, feel free to contact us and we will be glad to help

Hi,

Thank you for the reply. Sorry to know that you are unable to see High Definition Audio Device and other options.

  1. Which version of Windows are you using?
  2. What do you see under Sound, Video, and Game controllers?

You can try the above steps by going through the below steps.

Method 1

  1. Press Windows Logo Key+X. Click On Device Manager.
  2. Look for Sound, Video, and Game controllers.
  3. Under it, you will find High Definition Audio Device.
  4. Right click on it, you will see disable option.
  5. Click on disable.
  6. Again right click on High Definition Audio Device to enable it.

Method 2

  1. Press Windows Logo Key+X.  Click on Control Panel.
  2. Click on Hardware and Sound.
  3. Double click on Sound.
  4. Under the Playback tab, you should see your HDMI Device.
  5. Right click on it and select Set as Default Device.
  6. Click Ok.

Hope now you will be able to find those options. If issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

I have the same problem, but it doesn't even have a option called "Digital Output" or near. I have tried allowing it to show all devices (hidden and Disconnected) but it was no worth. I have tried to update the driver but it says it is the last version.

I hope you can help me on this.

    Thanks

Look man you guys need to roll out a patch for this real quick. This is obviously not the users fault despite how often it usually is. I have tried literally everything I could possible think of to fix this issue yet nothing is solving the problem. This, like most problems that occur after installing a Microsoft update, is on your end. I have kept Microsoft updates off for 5 years on one computer, 3 years on another, this one I had to update it to 8.1 for a game I play and look what happens. Working perfectly since I obtained this new laptop and now since I updated to 8.1 I encounter more problems I have had to deal with than all my other computers combined. Fix this please.

My HDMI TV Monitor is picked up - but it says it is disabled. I get Video through the HDMI cable, but no sound. The sound worked in windows 7 but now with windows 8.1, only the video shows up.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Go into Device Manager

Expand Sound, Video, and Game controllers

Right click on High Definition Audio Device

    Select DISABLE

Right click on High Definition Audio Device again

    Select Enable

It should now be working. If not:

Go back to your Sound Properties

Under the playback tab, you should see your HDMI Device

Right click on it and select Set as Default Device.

Both your video AND sound should work now.

I have to do this everytime I unplug my damn HDMI cable. I never had to do this until I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It's ****.

    ****SOLVED****

Went through the same issue and hassle and wasted 2 hours trying to figure it out...

Install the below (i know there is a newer version available, but this is what worked for me):

    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail\_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=23339&lang=eng&OSVersion=Windows%208.1%2C%2064-bit\*&DownloadType=Drivers

    1. Make sure you are ONLY connected to your main display (monitor..etc)
    2. Remove the HDMI cable (the one with the issue)
    3. Install PROPERLY and close unnecessary programs
    4. RESTART after installation

Following all the above made it work for me. Hope it helps (-_-)b
