Silverlight and Windows 8 RT

The old Microsoft (when they were much more successful) adapted their operating systems to make it easy for people to transition from the old OS to the new.  The new MS, like you, takes the opposite attitude: arrogantly assuming that it is everybody else's job to work around MS.

Lovefilm and Sky (and indeed the UK Parliament site) might legitimately wonder why they should have to rewrite their websites, which they wrote in good faith in a programming language that MS was supposedly committed to, so that they are compatible with an operating system that hardly anybody has bought.

You also forget that I have a third choice to complaining to MS or complaining to a third party: I don't complain at all and simply buy something else. That's how markets work.

I really hope you don't work for MS, for their sake!

if you keep complaining here instead of complaining to sky and lovefilm etc, you'll keep achieving nothing. Silverlight is dead, move on. want a service that uses Silverlight? ask the company for an app. that's what android users did, that's what apple users did. do the same. or buy an x86 windows tablet and run all the Silverlight applications you want. those tablets are even cheaper than the windows rt ones.

Just found out that Sky Go requires silverlight as well.  Currently sky don't seem to want to support the Microsoft World working mainly with Apple and Android.

I love the fact that this discussion has been going on for two years and there is no real definitive answer.

It just means that I will have to take two tablets with me when i go away.  Are microsfot going to pay for excess baggage??

So although Silverlight is not available... most of the video services now work.  Those that don't work through the websites seem to have all released a window's application that is available through the app store.  

Lisa, Lovefilm is a major provider, owned by Amazon, and it doesn't work on Windows RT either in the web browser or via an app.  And it's not just entertainment channels that don't work.  I have to access video website for work sometimes, such as the UK Parliament site, and that doesn't work either. 

Rather than making all the providers re-write their sites to be compatible with RT it would have been much smarter if they had made RT compatible with them.  Working with the world as it is, rather than as they would wish it to be. 

Hopefully the new management of Microsoft will be a bit more savvy.  They have some great technology but they haven't leveraged it effectively because, with RT and in many other ways, they haven't finished the job.

I originally replied to this with the same question as everyone else and through further research found that although MS was not releasing Silverlight on the Windows 8RT  they were releasing updates to allow most of the video service providers websites to work on the tablet.

I will say that it took a FULLLLLLL weekend of downloading windows updates and starting and restarting my tablet and restarting scan for more updates.... However, after ALLLL updates were installed... Xfinity & Amazon video as well as several others work without issue on my tablet.

So although Silverlight is not available... most of the video services now work.  Those that don't work through the websites seem to have all released a window's application that is available through the app store.  

Again... You have run the windows updater and install ALL updates.... reboot and repeat until no additional updates are found.  

Still does not cover the issues with logging into classes or secure corporate sites....
