You're getting error 0x800f0906 because you have KB3022345 installed. Uninstall it by going to Programs and Features in Control Panel and then click the link to "View installed updates".

In the Search box top right, copy/paste (or type) KB3022345 and when it appears in the list, right click it and choose Uninstall.

    Hi,

Thank you for your reply. I have considered before refreshing my PC, but this is nuclear option. The PC originally came with standard Windows 8 installed, which I then updated to 8 Pro and then to 8.1. Dell did not supply recovery media, so presumably I'd have to find that from somewhere. I have 150+ programs (not applications) installed on the system and I would have to find the current versions, prove that I paid for the chargeable ones and install them. All of this is at least a week's work - I'd rather avoid that if at all possible.

As you can see from my reply to tombster, the indications are that at least two of my Windows files have been corrupted. Does Microsoft maintain clean copies of its 8.1 Pro system from which I could download and replace my corrupted files?

Thank you for your advice. It provided a very useful pointer to what may well solve my problem.

However, unfortunately I do not have access to an unsullied Windows 8.1 system to provide a new source for Dism. I've tried using a copy of my existing \winsxs folder. The Dism run failed with the message of "Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired, Error: 0x800f081f". The log seems to indicate that  the files "amd64_microsoft-windows-wwanapndatabase_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.17056_none_8ea5cebdc851fa0a\ApnDatabase.xml" and  "amd64_locationprovider.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16504_none_2f91d5b6c5b47b11\LocationProvider.inf" in my \winsxs folder are corrupt.

Any idea as to where I could find some uncorrupted versions of these and possibly some other files from \winsxs?

    Cheers

      Tom

    Hi Thomas,

Thank you for your comments and advice. My system is a standalone desktop PC and as far as I can tell I am not using group policies and I am linked to the standard Windows Update services. Any thoughts as to how your experience could be adapted to my environment?

    Cheers,

      Tom
