How do you turn off Fullscreen mode in Windows 8?

Despite all of the annoyances of Windows 8, I must say, the random "switching to fullscreen mode" is the most aggravating. . I thought I turned off full screen mode, but it keeps doing that fullscreen.... thing. It's done it -at least- 5 times while I typed this.

    Even though that is not my problem, I had already done that since I would run into that problem occasionally.

    My problem is with the Calculator program and others that only run in full screen.  So I get my whole 24 inch monitor showing the calculator.  I cannot easily check out the source of my need for the calculator.  I read in another post from around 2013 that it is called "Modern Design" of something like that.  I just want a small window that I can resize and move around so that I can see other windows for the data to calculate.  My memory is getting worse as I age and I cannot memorized several numbers anymore.  I realize I can ALT-TAB switch windows get a number.  ALT-TAB switch to calc and enter it and then ALT-TAB back to get another number, etc.

    Hard to tell remotely, but there are a couple of possibilities...

    Are you running the "calc" program or launching a "calculator app?"  (RUN CALC will launch the calculator exe rather than the app)

    If that starts in full screen, click the window icon to force it into a "window"

    If that is still too large, you can resize the win10 calculator somewhat by grabbing a corner. 

    fwiw, I have a 22" monitor and the calculator takes up about 15% of the screen.

    If that is not it, need more info... screen shot, "about" information, how calculator is launched... etc.

    Run calc runs the "open office" pdf reader.

    If I put "calculator" in the run edit box of the start menu, I get 2 Calculator entries.  One does the full screen and the other brings up the old simple 4 function calculate from previous windows versions.  This 2nd one has the resize control disabled.  But, this is all I need.  I made a short cut for it and it's on my desktop.

    BTW, if I put calc in the edit box, I get 4 entries. Calc.exe is one of them and it's the same as the 2nd calculator.  "open office" is the 4th one.
