Let me point out something that you perhaps don't realize: Windows 8
has two interfaces; the Modern/Metro Interface (which may be all
you've looked at) and the traditional Desktop Interface. You can use
either one or both.
That traditional  Desktop Interface is almost identical to Windows 7's
interface; the biggest difference is that there is no Start Orb to
click to bring up the Start menu. But note that you can get the Start
Orb back by using one of several third-party programs, either free or
very inexpensive (Classic Shell at
http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/ and Start8 at
http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/; my personal preference is
Start8, but they are both very good).  And going from one interface to
the other is very easy; there are several ways, but simply pressing
the Windows key is perhaps the easiest.
I use Windows 8, almost exclusively with the traditional desktop
interface, and with Start 8 installed. If you were to look at and use
my computer, you would have a hard time realizing that it's not
Windows 7.

What David said, plus you might consider an alternative to adobe... my vote is for Foxit.

The other question is how you are opening these pdf files.  PDF files opened in web browsers generally open them in a "plugin window" that has it's own set of problems.  I always set the browser to open pdf's in the default pdf software.

If you open files using file explorer, right click on a pdf file and select "choose default program"  There may already be an alternative to what is currently being used.

Finally, I have avoided the "metro" structure with a passion.  fwiw, "Reader"  is ms' pdf reader "App" and "Apps" are different animals than PC software.

FYI MICROSOFT IDIOTS. HERE IS THE INTELL THAT YOU DIDNT GATHER.

Like most people over 25, I have always used PC's in my office at work AND in my office at home with the full set of MS office and Adobe products for high productivity for business And general use and convenience of having the same in both places.

I also have an iphone, (and a ipad with a phone chip JUST FOR GAMES) where i download lots of apps. If I run out of good apps there I will buy and android tablet or whatever it is called.

My wife and daughter both use Apple laptops (because they liked what they can do with photos). But I dont use them because I dont want to learn to use a different computer (you idiots) I dont have the time or the inclination.

Just install Acrobat Reader, which runs on the desktop. The installer will set the default for PDFs to Acrobat, and you'll stay on the desktop. This is the same thing you would have done with 7 and earlier, since Acrobat Reader didn't come with Windows.

Thanks Bev but that seems to be a solution to a different problem.

When opening a pdf attachment to an email in outlook, the Mongrel software win8 opens it in full screen mode, so I have to do extra work to find the x to close the window. PLUS I loose my bottom menu so I can NOT quickly go back to the email then back to the PDF ETC. It is fuc&^&%ng ridiculous.
