how can i lock desktop icons in windows 8

I don't believe MS "Help People" (Ha-BAD NAME-NO HELP PEOPLE would be more appropriate) read the questions before entering boilerplate text.

It is obvious this is a  long standing problem that just is not being dealt with.

(I recently spent 1 1/2 hours on the phone with MS after Win 8.1 upgrade removed all non MS driver functionality (like USB ports !!). At the end of this time she admitted ".. our engineers are working on this" !)

I have the same problem.  The desktop icons keep rearranging themselves.  Duh.  I've been using a PC or laptop with Windows for quite a while and knew how to stop the icons from rearranging themselves via right click desktop, yada yada..... in the previous Windows versions.  That process ****does not work*** on my Windows 8 laptop.  I've tried it and tried it and tried it and tried it.......   I only have one monitor.  I don't change my screen resolution.  I don't change desktop themes, although I have now unchecked the "allow themes to change desktop icons" option.  None of the previously suggested fixes has worked, except that I have not tried installing the additional software one respondent recommended  This is really, really annoying.  Arrrrghhhhh

I have a problem that once I open a word document and save it, it saves the icon in  a new place on the desktop. Is there some possibility to lock the word documents on desktop that even if I change them and save them they wont move?

So once again Microsoft has shown that they don't care about their customers. We pay crazy amounts of money for the OS and cant get support on what should not be an issue to begin with. 

More and more I am finding reasons to switch to Linux. Linux Mint and Ubuntu are almost at the point where windows will no longer be needed for work and day to day use and honestly I cant wait.

Can someone from Microsoft at least acknowledge us and that there is a problem here? Maybe even let us know it's being worked on. Even lie to us and tell us you care...

Well, turns out this problem is solved on ANOTHER microsoft support thread... so microsoft support people aren't even good at searching their OWN site! Anyway, there is another setting that allows the icons to scroll..

1. control panel
2. display
3. screen resolution
4. find the advanced settings link lower right
5. click the "on screen display" tab
6. uncheck the "Enable Auto Scroll" box

Done... thanks for nothing microsoft... Greg

p.s. why in the **** is this defaulted to on?
