how can i lock desktop icons in windows 8

after yet again getting "not charging" (why does that happen?) I followed directions -- device manager, uninstall whatever. it worked, as it has before.

it said Restart, so I did. When re-opened, all icons had moved to right side, But then right-clicking desktop screen did nothing. So now what?

  (possibly relevant -- just before, I'd accidentally split screen in two and was looking for instructions to get out of it. maybe I'm stuck on right-side split?)

Someone marked Manasa's reply as an answer, and clearly after 6 pages of people saying it is not, this is not right.

I call on the people on this thread to report abuse, as marking it as an answer is clearly a violation of the rules, i.e. LYING...

We all know what is going on, Microsoft wants to "feel good" that it is resolving issues. Cheating the system by marking an answer when tons of people say it is not an answer is not right.

Microsoft, either fix it, or own up to the fact you don't give a darn, i.e. won't expend the energy to fix it.

Does not work. Desktop icons still rearrange after reboot

Experiencing the same issue with desktop rearranging after restart. I use a second monitor with my laptop running Windows 8.1. I have tried all suggestions except the 3rd party utilities 2 people suggested. It seems to me I should not need to add potentially malware ridden 3rd party solutions to something MS should have addressed long ago. If these programmers can create a utility that works around/resolves this issue then why can't MS offer one? I am nearly resigned to the necessity to re-sort my desktop occasionally but still hoping MS will resolve this.

I hope so. It just happened to me again! So annoying!
